New Speakers (and Sound Card)

After sampling speakers at this one store, I fell in love with the Logitech X-530. It's an excellent set of 5 speakers (central, front l/r, rear l/r) plus subWOOFer, but the price was $90. "Well, let's go to another store to see if we can buy them cheaper," I thought. The next store we went sold them for $80, but who'd'a thunk that we'd find ( Read more... )

your system seems very much comparable to my speaker system... i got mine for like $50 after shipping from a site online, but that was a crazy nuts deal. you got a really good deal on yours, and good on ya for looking and finding them for cheap. surround sound is such a sweet thing. i have an internal Audigy 2 card, but as i have a desktop it's not eating up valuable space in a laptop, and it sounds fantastic. i hope you enjoy those speakers as much as they deserve to be enjoyed.

I have the option of setting the speakers for DMA--Direct Memory Access. Is there a huge difference between DMA and no DMA? I'm perfectly happy with the sound I have now.

Your speakers have slightly more wattage and for the price you got them, I concur that your online deal was "crazy nuts." Had I gotten the speakers before the 20th of this month, I would have received $10 rebate on the sound card. Oh well, big whoop; I'm gleeful!

DMA isn't a feature i'm familiar with, so i honestly don't know. my educated guess would be that you should turn it on if you have a large amount of system memory (RAM), but that if you don't have a large amount then turning it on might cause you to take a performance hit at times. but as i say, i honestly don't know. that's just what i'd guess from the name and how memory could possibly be involved in audio output.

Question:

If you had to mount your speakers on the wall in your dorm room, how would you do it?

Your setup sounds just like Gavin's. I think he got the same speakers and sound "box".

Where are you living this year?
