If you haven't already encountered them, I commend to you two recent works about Carthusians:

1) The film, Into Great Silence, shot on location at La Grande Chartreuse, the Carthusian motherhouse.

2) The book, An Infinity of Little Hours, following the experiences of five young men who entered the Carthusian order in the early 1960's.

And maybe get a bottle of Chartreuse liqueur to sip as you watch or read. Get the green, as the yellow is too sweet; and start with a small bottle until you decide whether you like it. Chartreuse is not entry-level alcohol!
