Chapter 1-Part 2

“Well,” Kyuhyun began slowly, aware that the whole department was listening while pretending to be busy. “When I gave him his ring and he told me about his past lovers we had a long talk. We talked about past loves and our love. How they had changed and where we would be if we had stayed. I told him he was the only love for me and he said I was his only love. Then we talked about the people we had truly loved and he acknowledged that there is always a part of us that will love those that we truly give our hearts to.”

“Does he have one?” Ryeowook quipped from across the room, quickly shushed by his partner.

Smiling crookedly Kyuhyun shook his head, looking up to meet Siwon’s gaze.

“No,” he said after a moment. “He said that I am the first person he has truly loved, but that he had people that he had thought he had once loved and had taken years to truly get over.”

“I don’t believe this.” Siwon replied skeptically, shoving himself from his desk. “I’m going to go get another coffee.” Storming from the room irritably.

Stunned Kyuhyun watched him go.

“What’s with him?” he demanded once he had left.

“Nothing for you to worry about.” Heechul replied eyes riveted to his file.

“You probably just aren’t used to each other.” Ryeowook reassured.

“We‘ve been together for almost nine months.” Kyuhyun replied, eyes wandering towards the empty desk.

“You’re not exactly the easiest to get along with.” Heechul scoffed.

“And you should be talking?” Kyuhyun shot back.

“That’s enough.” A voice cut steely, causing the people in the room to look up. “I will not have disorder in my unit, do you understand me?”

Coldly the man’s eyes roved his unit, waiting for an answer. “Well?” he prompted.

“Sorry Chief.” Kyuhyun finally mumbled grudgingly.

“Yeah,” Heechul shrugged, sipping at his stolen coffee. “What he said.”

“Heechul,” the man warned lowly.

“Um Chief,” a young man cut nervously.

“What is it Jong-woon?” the man demanded lowly.

“Um,” he said uncertainly, “It’s dispatch.”

“And?”

“You’ll want to take this.”

Exhaling lowly the man pivoted, going to the man’s desk he picked up the receiver. “What is it?” he ground to the person on the other end. Eyes widening fractionally he nodded in consent. “Got it,” he bit. “I’ll have someone out there soon.” Hanging up the phone he turned to look at Kyuhyun.

“You and Choi take a squad car out to the Ahjung Apartments.”

“Why?” Siwon asked, entering the room to look at their Chief curiously.

“There’s been a homicide.” The man answered gravely.

“I thought Kangin and the rookie were on patrol.” Kyuhyun objected.

“The rookie couldn’t stomach it. Kangin got him out before he contaminated any of the scene, but we can’t risk him being there.”

“Got it,” Kyuhyun replied stonily, grabbing his gun and badge from his drawer.

“Anything you can tell us?” Siwon asked, grabbing his and Kyuhyun’s coats from the rack.

“Better hope you didn’t eat this morning.” The man replied.

“Understood.” Kyuhyun replied simply, grabbing his jacket from Siwon heading for the door.

“You alright?” Siwon asked, shoving his guns securely into their holsters as he followed the other out of the room.

“Yes.” Kyuhyun nodded, slipping through the door.

“You think it’s our guy?” Siwon asked, thick brows knitting curiously.

“I don’t know.” Kyuhyun admitted, buckling his seat belt. “I hope it is and I hope it isn’t.”

“I know what you mean.” Siwon ground lowly, turning the key in the ignition. Easing the car into reverse he carefully backed from the parking space.

“Um,” Siwon tried awkwardly after a long silence. “About earlier, sorry.”

“What was wrong?” Kyuhyun asked curiously.

“Uh, well,” Siwon tried eyes watching the road before him. “It’s kind of, well it’s personal. I mean it’s just,” he tried desperately, thinking of something to say.

“It’s fine.” Kyuhyun cut, smiling at his partner. “I already forgot about it.”

Glancing over at him Siwon smiled guiltily. “Thanks.” He mumbled.

“No problem.” Kyuhyun replied, looking out the window.

Pulling up to the apartments Kyuhyun’s eyes scanned the building quickly spotting the yellow police tape and squad cars.

“There.” He directed, pointing to the spot.

“Already saw it.” Siwon reassured, turning towards the crowded area. Frowning irritably his brows knit. “Why are there so many dammed people?” He cursed softly, flipping his sirens to try and clear the path.

“They‘re curious.” Kyuhyun supplied drily.

“Well they can go be curious somewhere else.” Siwon ground, putting the car into park.

“You want to tell them?” Kyuhyun offered, donning his hat as he slipped from the car.

Snorting Siwon rolled his eyes. “What and have chief breathing down my neck for improper behavior again?”

“It was just a suggestion.” Kyuhyun shrugged, smirking knowingly as the other slammed the car door heatedly.

“Suggestion my ass.” Siwon muttered darkly.

Laughing Kyuhyun began to shoulder through the cluster of people, mumbling apologies as Siwon followed. Straightening he halted in front of the taped off area. Calculatedly his eyes scanned the bustling crime scene, taking in the covered body and men that ardently worked the scene. An ambulance sat flashing, its lights uselessly in the corner, the paramedics scribbling at boards in their hands. Efficiently the criminal investigation teams were combing the scene for evidence, a slender young woman peering intently under the sheet that covered the still body. Attentively her eyes scanned the body beneath, thick dark pony tail cascading over her shoulder.  Chewing her lip thoughtfully she glanced up, catching Kyuhyun’s somber gaze. Exhaling slightly she stood, brushing the legs of her pants as she strode to them.

“I thought that Kangin and the rookie were on duty today?” she demanded curtly.

“It’s good to see you too Victoria.” Kyuhyun snorted, rolling his eyes as Siwon shuffled uncomfortably.

“The Rookie is a bit hung-over.” Siwon supplied uncomfortably.

Arching her brow she looked at them skeptically. “Never stopped any of you.”

“We also don’t puke everywhere.” Kyuhyun bit back.

Narrowing dangerously her dark eyes looked at him. “I wasn’t planning on working with you.”

“There was a time when you said otherwise.” Kyuhyun smirked.

“Well now I try not to.” She bit back.

“Feelings mutual.” Kyuhyun smirked back. “Unfortunately, here I am, and here you are.”

“Unfortunately.” She growled, crossing her gloved hands about her petite waist. Angrily her eyes locked with Kyuhyun’s as he looked at her in disinterest.

“So what do you have for us?” Siwon interrupted.

“A homicide.” She hissed, turning her gaze to Siwon as it softened slightly.

“Naw,” Kyuhyun rolled his eyes, shaking his head contemptuously. “You think?”

“Kyuhyun.” Siwon warned as the woman whipped her head back around to glare at him. Holding her glare Kyuhyun bit his tongue as Siwon elbowed him irritably, sending him a warning glare. Sighing irritably he broke his gaze, looking past he to the crime scene.

“What kind?” Kyuhyun asked irritably.

Looking over her shoulder Victoria’s face contorted in distaste before she looked at them, her dispute with Kyuhyun forgotten.

“Whoever did this,” she said softly, “Is one sick bastard.”

“What do you mean?” Kyuhyun asked, brow knitting curiously.

Sighing irritably Victoria bit back the snide comment that threatened. “I mean, it’s not something we normally deal with.”

“Such as?” Siwon prodded gently.

Sighing she beckoned them across the tape, strolling to the body. Brow furrowing Kyuhyun noticed the obvious lack of blood about the body.

“Was she suffocated?” he asked softly.

“As horrible as this may sound,” Victoria whispered softly, “I wish the poor girl was.”

“Then how did she die?” Siwon pressed.

“She had a knife taken to her.” She replied stoically.

“Then where is all of the blood?” Kyuhyun pressed, looking about the crime scene.

“There is none.” She stated, ignoring the obvious.

“So the body was moved?” Kyuhyun mused thoughtfully, squatting down to eye the ground for possible clues.

“That’s what we were thinking.” Victoria agreed, professional mode taking control as she stood behind him.

“Find anything?” He asked, accepting the pair of gloves Siwon handed him, pulling them over his fingers he flexed, getting a feel for the rubbery material.

“Not yet,” she conceded. “But I haven’t gotten the chance.”

“What were you doing?” Kyuhyun demanded, looking back at her accusingly.

“Examining the body.” She glared, clenching her fist to ignore him.

“It took you that long?”

“I had to do it while she was covered.” She clenched.

Arching his brow Kyuhyun’s fingers hovered where they had been about to pull the sheet back. “She’s nude?”

“Yes,” Victoria acknowledged. “There were already people here taking photos when I arrived.

Brows rising higher Kyuhyun resisted the urge to curse loudly. “Siwon.” He ground.

“Got it.” The other nodded, understanding his irritation he strode towards the crowd, pulling a large zip-lock from his pocket as he began to demand that the citizens that had recorded any of the crime scene hand over their devices as they were now a part of the crime scene. Eyes hardening at the loud protests he ardently reminded them of the penalties for hindering an investigation and the ease at which they could trace any phone that uploaded evidence. Humming in approval Kyuhyun turned back towards the covered corpse.

“Quite a partner you got there.” Victoria nodded in approval as she watched person after person hand their devices over.

“Good enough.” He shrugged indifferently.

Arching a brow Victoria looked at him skeptically. “You don’t get along?”

“We’re fine.” He replied neutrally.

“But?” she demanded.

“No buts.” He stated.

Smirking she looked at him contemptuously. “Oh I get it.”

“Get what?” Kyuhyun replied in irritation, reaching over to pick of a shard of plastic, inspecting it keenly.

“You’re still pining for him.”

“No I’m not.” Kyuhyun glared, refraining from crushing the plastic. “He and I are just still getting accustomed to one another.”

“It’s been nine months.” She deadpanned. “I should know.” She added a little bitterly. “Besides, if it’s not about him how did you know who I was talking about?” she demanded.

Ignoring her Kyuhyun turned back to the body, eyes scanning her thoughtfully. “You said that he took a knife to her?”

Pursing her lips at the subject change Victoria nodded her head affirmatively. “The bastard knew what he was doing too.”

“Why do you say that?”

“He took her eyes.” She said mournfully, eyes looking at the still corpse remorsefully.

“How did she die?” Kyuhyun asked softly.

“He took her heart as well.”

“He what?” Kyuhyun asked, color draining from his face slightly.

“From the looks of it,” she said softly, “He did it while she was alive.”

Stomach churning Kyuhyun felt the blood pound behind his eyes, heart wrenching for the still girl before them. “Are you sure?” he asked softly.

“I’ll have to have Jessica complete the autopsy, but from the contusions, and looks of the arteries I am pretty sure.” She said softly. “She bled a lot, corpses don’t bleed.”

“You said she is nude?” Kyuhyun asked cautiously.

“Yes.”

“So there was nothing there to identify the body with?”

“No,” she shook her head, eyes riveted before her. “We couldn’t find anything.”

Nodding his head Kyuhyun’s eyes flashed sadly. “Alright, I take it you already photographed the scene?”

“Yes, I did that earlier.”

“Take the shots you have to Heechul, he can reconstruct the image and get a clean portrait. I’ll compare the images to the missing person’s database and see if anyone’s reported the poor girl missing. If nothing pops up there we will run her photo in the media. Other than that I don’t want her there, understand?”

Nodding Victoria stood, looking down at him. “Are you going to sweep the scene?”

“Yes,” He said reaching up to the top of the sheet. “I need to see if I can find anything.”

Nodding her head she looked at him, “I understand.” Hesitantly she looked at his hovering hand and pensive face she looked at him warily. “Are you sure you want to do that?”

“I need to know what kind of sicko we are dealing with.” He said steely, finger wrapping around the sheet uncertainty. Inhaling he slowly pulled the sheet back, his stomach plummeting to the ground. Inhaling raggedy he stumbled back, bile rising in his throat. Turning he fled to the edge of the crime scene, the acidic liquid ripping through him as he hurled, sides wrenching as he heaved drily. Gasping for breath he was able to stop, eyes leaking with the sensation.

“Are you alright?” Victoria asked worriedly.

Nodding his head he looked up, catching the curious eye of his partner. Inhaling shakily he stood, looking at Victoria vacantly.

“Don’t take those pictures to Heechul.”

“Why?” she asked dumbfounded.

“Because.” He whispered softly, body shuddering as he looked at the corpse, dull brown hair poking out from where he had hastily thrown it back. Shivering he turned away. “I know who she is.”

“You what?” Victoria demanded.

“I recognize her.” He whispered.

“How?” she asked incredibly, eyes scanning the other’s face.

“I, she,” Kyuhyun tried before exhaling tiredly, voice catching. “She’s the first woman I ever dated.” He said softly.
