Not that these are exclusive to LJ, just that this is where I encounter them most often. I'm leaving this one post public, just as a reference point for the nosy

Actually, I agree with them on the hedonistic thing! heh heh
Okay, it's ethical hedonism, but still.
But yeah, that whole line of "atheists lives are empty" is old and annoying. I also can't stand when people say that atheists don't believe in anything. As if it's religion or nothing. I believe in reason.
i agree with most of what you said. However, I would like to clarify that one who chooses to continue to eat meat does not constitute being a murderer. I enjoy my meat, but I do not litter or waste. What I have is what I use, what I do not use gets recycled. Nor am I a fool, nor despicable. I hope (and I trust this is the case, knowing you as I do) that you were not lumping carnivorous people in with those you deem "ignorant, wasteful fools." Littering and wasting? Yeah. I don't know what kind of an ass would encourage such behaviour. I hope they drown in their own filth.

Oh Gods, no. I do wish that meat eaters would put more pressure on the meat industry to reduce/eliminate the amount of pollution and abuse they allow, but I certainly don't think you are murderers! No, that comment was inspired by a few different things that have come up lately. People trying to convince others that recycling is a sham and that people should stop doing it, that we are replanting trees and therefore shouldn't concern ourselves with how much wood or paper we waste and that the meat industry is all A-OK and the stuff we hear (and SEE) regarding animal abuse is faked for our (veg-heads) pleasure.
If a carnivorous person were to research the meat industry in their province/state thoroughly, including visiting the actual farms where the livestock are raised, they would find that the standards vary from place to place. The actual slaughter is always going to horrify, given that we are well aware of what's coming. Having family members with farms, I am well aware of the standards set forth by this province, and am comfortable knowing that prior to ending up nourishing me, the animals I eat are well taken care of. There are 2 horse ranches here in Canada (in Alberta, I believe) that have been shut down for starving their horses. There is quite the outcry, and it's the type of thing that isn't tolerated. Animal abuse is not in the least faked. It's sick, and there is quite the outpouring of protest against the lenient laws Canada has in regard to domestic animal abuse.
-There is left-wing and right-wing and nothing else. Anyone claiming to not be either is lying, dumb or in denial. I want to destroy the system--what side would you like me to stand on? :) ilu let's stomp out the system, together
i actively convince people to do otherwise! i had a rant going on how easy it is for us to save the planet and still live in realitive comfort. damn gluttons
( ... )
Yeah, atheists are often just as bad as religious folk when it comes to wanting to convert. I think it's all pretty silly--spiritual beliefs are highly personal and, while encouraging one to question things isn't necessarily bad, encouraging them to ditch their beliefs entirely is rather vulgar

my stance on political scales are strange. people say my thinking falls a bit to the left, but i've always considered myself to be purple. for instance i don't like abortion i do think it's murder, but i don't think we should outlaw it because it's the woman's body and therefore her right to make the decision. plus there are occassions in which it is necessary like a bad home situation, or possible death because of the pregnancy etc etc...like i said we can't really do away with it all together. i do agree with you though; people do need to think beyond the barrier of left right red blue. if your limited to that, you probably haven't formed your own opinion in the first place.
