at the long end vibration reduction anti shake whatever they call it is very handy unless you plan to shoot exclusivity from a good tripod.
would definitely look at third party lenses for a price advantage. I have a pile of British mags which do a better job on discussing craft and gear.... will do a quick run through for reviews.
definitely go to ~500 for more reach over the 300. You might consider a zoom as well there are some fine ones out there.
If I recall there was a Sigma lens that got magnificent ratings.... will bring the mags into the centre for you.
Oo, thanks! I'm looking at the nikon 80-400, the sigma 170-500, and the sigma 50-500. My qualm with the sigmas is the lack of vibration reduction, as well as the reports from some users that it was noticeably less sharp than the nikons, and had more distortion.
seems the magazines I needed for you were among the last bunch I culled out.
MPS would have let you shoot a roll with the lenses you were considering Don's and PhaseII would likely do the same... chengs or changs on 22 as well. could be worth checking the used and consignment too.
I had thought you might be looking for fixed focal length from your first post I am 4 times less envious now.
if you are shooting film you could consider getting the D80 which would put your 300mm at about 450 effective and you could choose between digital and film.
I think that there may be too much overlap to make adding any of the lenses unless you replace an old ?-300 with the newer tech of the Nikkor 80-400.
have I made it more confusing that it was to start with?
lol i'm shooting digital; i have a d70 body. I will definitely be bringing the camera along to try out the lenses, and will also naturally be inquiring about any used lenses. My 70-300 is only about a year or two old -- it's still being sold new. It works just fine, I just want a longer lens.
