I sat down next to the water looking up to the sky. I know I shouldn't waste time, it was the part of the day where they were least active, I needed to utilize this time to find my next hiding spot for the night. But it has been so long since I've just sat and thought, so I allowed myself to slip off into the memories. I tried to remember the times before this all happened, back when I could just be with him. But that day, that one unforgivable day kept replacing the laughter and loving glances with screams and looks of horror. His face falling displaced among the frantic crowd of those who are running for their lives, and those who are running to make a cannibal meal due to an uncontrollable urge. I feel like such a fool for following my instinct and joining the others in a frantic life or death run, losing him amongst the crowd, screaming his name out as I continue in the stampede to become safe, if only for a little while.

I didn't really know what was going on before that day. I only knew the gist of it all. I knew something about a man made disease that had gotten out of the government's labs, that's all the news had broadcast about it. Leave it up to the human race to fuck everything up by fucking with stuff that was better left alone. The day all hell broke loose was the day the government finally decided it was a good ideal to tell it's citizen's what was happening.

One of those official fucks got up there in his suit and polished face, telling us that our government had been secretly perfecting a disease that would kill enemies in matter of seconds by coming into contact with any open orifice. First by attacking their immune system then their brain, destroying them completely. Evidently they couldn't perfect this though, the official continued to say how at first they tested it on rats but it seemed to fail as some would get back up after a matter of minutes. They just thought it was the rats though, that some were immune to it. They didn't even think of researching why the 'immune' rats just got back up after being dead, before they jumped the gun and tried it out on prisoners. They said they tried it out first on four, they were almost successful, but instead of dying instantly, they would gradually die anywhere from minutes to days. But it seemed that humans were not 'immune' to this disease. So they thought, that is until test subject three got his little happy ass up off that morgue table and had himself a feast, infecting others with the disease. And eventually it made it's self out into the streets and infected others until it was to the point that we needed to run for our safety. And of course late as ever, the fucking government finally decides to declare a nation wide crisis. It fucking reminded me of that one hurricane that America had years ago, Katrina or Katelyn something like that, and how their shitty ass president took days to send help to the people in need. And after the official finished his speech he turned and walked to his helicopter, all the while being protected by body guards, probably going to some underground safe house while the rest of us faced flesh eating masses.
What I basically got from his shotty ass speech was, “Congratulations we fucked you and now we're going to go run and hide and leave you to fend for yourselves” With a big fucking smiley face. Great.

My gaze naturally drifts across the landscape, pure habit now, the more cautious you are the better it seems now a days. I scooped a handful of water from the river and brought it to my mouth. The taste was bitter, but then again who the fuck cares, it's been days since I last drank something. I want to just shove my face into the water, a cool refreshment on such a hot day, but I know better than that. Anything can sneak up on you, all it takes is just that one second of your guard being down. Man am I ever kicking my self in the ass for allowing the hearing in my left ear to dwindle down to just mere whispers, if only I would've known.
A small flock of birds dash out into the opening of the river. I grab the crow bar that was dangling off my belt on the right side. Flocks of birds don't just fly out like that, at least not anymore. I quickly scan the area looking for further signs of movement coming from the trees that surrounded the small river. I slowly back into the water, feeling it was safer than being out in the open, after all I can swim, those things limp, how good at swimming can they be?
I see some bushes rustling and I duck down leaving only my nose up unsubmerged. I want to think it's him, but then again I don't, the thought of what he might have been turned into kills me. The thing emerges from the hidy holes of the forest, great it's a small group of zombies. I quickly scan the faces trying to see if he was in it, he wasn't. I took a deep breath through my nose and fully submerged myself and began to swim to the other side of the river.
My lungs clenched and burned in protest, all those years of smoking have really come to bite me in the ass, but finally I managed to reach the other side. I tried to control my need to gasp, but was unsuccessful. I looked back and seen the rotting living dead walking towards the water, were they really going to attempt to cross? I pulled myself out of the water, and call me stupid, but I decided to see if they'd make it across.
Learning. Since those idiots fucked up the world it's been all about learning. The one thing I hated almost more than this whole epidemic.
After a few minutes I figured they had been washed away, eaten by fish, or succumbed to the water, but then I seen a head poking out. The fucking zombie was fully intact, well as intact as it was before he dared the water, and still coming towards me. Fuck staying around, I bolted.

I ran through the trees in no particular direction except away from the zombies. Occasionally getting tripped up a bit from a tree root here and there. Eventually I needed to stop to catch my breath, damn smoking was really working against me. I looked behind me, there was no zombies that I could see. Either I lost them or they're just catching up to me, following my sent. I take the time anyways to lean against a tree to catch my breath, looking around my surroundings to get an ideal where to go next, my right hand always hanging idly by my crowbar just in case.
It felt like it had only been seconds before I heard the quiet noises of foot steps. I gripped my crowbar, ready to take a swing. The sound was coming from the other side of the tree I was leaning on. I peered around just as two figures came out of the messes of trees into a bit of clearing. I naturally scan their faces to make sure it wasn't him, though I felt dismayed as I saw none even remotely resembled him. Something seemed off though. I squint my eyes for a better look. They both lacked the decaying flesh and limp, they weren't infected. They were whispering to each other checking the area. Deep down I was actually hoping they were zombies, I hate people even more now. You can't trust anyone anymore. They would kill you for the bit of food or shelter you had. Just like those bastards that tricked me into letting them into my car a few weeks ago. What a great job that had done me, being robbed and forced out of my car at gun point, while at the same time a group of mindless fucking zombies are creeping up on you. The human race has completely gone back in our growth to step fucking zero.
One of the men grabbed the others forearm and froze. They both looked in the same direction, I turned my gaze in the direction as they were. I strained my hearing, there was some snarls and fast, heavy foot steps. I seen the two men grab their weapons, a bat and a monkey wrench. The group of zombies from earlier finally caught up, even more motivated by the scent of these fucks.
I think about just leaving them and letting them deal with the cannibal party themselves, but another look at them tells me they're young and have little experience. I pull my crow bar out from my belt and grip it tight, I can't just leave two kids to deal with something like this.
The sounds of the zombies were closer and I could barely start to make out the shapes of the masses as they approached. If it's the same number of zombies as before it would be easy to take them out, now with three people. I step out from behind the tree towards the two. They startle and turn to me with their weapons raised, ready to swing. I raise my hands up in front of my face, my right still holding my crowbar. “I'm not infected.” I say.
They lowered their weapons, they must not have been very experienced with strangers or they're just stupid.
“Is there anyone with you?” The shorter one with the bat yelled.
“Just a small entourage of zombies that followed me.” I lightly jog towards them hearing the sounds of the living dead getting to close for comfort.
“You brought a herd of zombies towards us!?” The taller one shouted.
“How the fuck would I know I'd run into two kids running for my life?”
“We're not kids.”
“That doesn't matter, what does matter is the small group of fucking flesh eaters that are approaching. Now shut up, so I can listen.”
I listened the best I could for the familiar grunts and groans that were heard moments ago, but alas I could no longer hear them. I looked at the taller one.
“I suppose you two have a camp somewhere around here where there's others?”
They both nodded their heads.
“How close?”
“Just a few yards that way.” The shorter one pointed slightly towards the side where the zombies should have been coming from. “Why?”
I couldn't help but point my finger in the same direction, “That way?”
he creased his brow, “Yeah.”
“How many are there?”
“I don't know twenty . . . thirty.” The shorter one said scratching his head.
Well it's fucking obvious that the zombies picked up on the camps scent seeing that there's more fucking people.
“Hey we're not going back to camp until we kill that herd that followed you here!”
“That's right.” The taller one agreed. “We can't lead them back there.”
“Well we don't have too.” I spat out. “It seems they've already picked up on the camps scent and seeing as there's more people in your stupid fucking camp they've decided to spare us and go for a much larger meal.”
“WHAT!?” They both yelled.
I shrugged, this really wasn't my problem. I could care less about their little fucking camp.
The shorter one turned and started running, then stopped abruptly.
“Shinya! Come on! We have to warn the others!”
The taller one, that I was now informed was Shinya, didn't move.
“Shinya come on!”
Finally after a few seconds of the dip shit waiting he took off and left this Shinya fellow behind.
I turned and started walking the other way.
“Wait!” Shinya yelled after me before running to catch up with me. “Where are you going? The camp is the other way!”
“Yeah and?”
“Aren't you going to join us?”
“Fuck no.”
“Huh?”
“I'm not fucking joining your cult camp.” I tell him.
“It's not a cult.”
I stopped walking, “You do know you're going the wrong way don't you? Judging by the way your friend ran, your camp is that away.” I pointed over my shoulder.
“Yeah, but I just can't leave you.”
“Sure you can.” I started walking again.
“Fine, then I'll just have to come with you.”
“No.”
“No?”
“Look kid I know for a fact my hearing is worst than yours, so don't even play the 'I can't hear you' game with me.”
“I wasn't trying to.” He said.
“Your camp.” I said stopping. “Is that way.” I pointed back in the direction the other idiot had run off to.
“I'm not going.”
Fuck this brat was really starting to annoy me. What did I have to yell at him like kids do in movies when they're trying to get their dog to run away after their mom said they can't have it anymore?
“Go back to your camp!” I yelled.
“No!”
“Look kid, I don't like other people, which is why I'm traveling alone. Besides don't you have some kind of tie to that camp other than safety?”
“No.” He said and looked down. “My entire family is dead. I had a dog, Miyu, but the zombies attacked our camp and one of the people from the camp threw him at one of the zombies to distract it, so he could kill it.”
“So zombies eat dogs?” I ask.
“Yeah.” Shinya said in a barely audible whisper.
“I'm sorry.” I tell him.
Geez what the fuck could I have told him?
“Isn't there someone else there though? A girl or something?”
He shook his head no.
“Boy?”
He gave me a funny look, “No.”
I let out and exasperated sigh, “Fine.”
