Chapter 6 Part B I wake to screaming. I shoot up from my position on the ground and search for Shinya. I can't see him anywhere but the screams continue. I can't pin point where they're coming from! It feels like I'm surrounded by the unnerving screams, everywhere I look there's nothing but trees and pitch blackness. I cover my ears tightly with my hands and squeeze my eyes close. After a few moments I open my eyes and see Shinya's kitten running, she has red marks on her white fur. I take my hands down from my ears as she runs past me. I can still hear the screams, more softer now. I run towards where I think they're coming from.
“Shinya!?” I call out.
The screaming stop, now there was no more than mere gurgles and moans. Passing a rather fat tree, I was about to call out his name again but instead I let out a gasp. I stand frozen to the spot out of pure shock and horror as I watch a zombie gorge itself on Shinya's intestines. Shinya seems to notice me and reaches his left arm back to me as blood spilled out his mouth. I bend down to hold his hand, as I grab a hold of it the zombie looks up at me and lets out a heart stopping snarl.
Letting out a gasp I sit up and pat my torso to make sure I'm okay, it was just a dream. The zombie though.. his face .. and his hair was exactly like mine. Drenched in cold sweat I quickly look for Shinya to make sure he's okay. My eyes land on him, he's curled up holding his kitten to his chest. I smile a bit at the clam peaceful way his face was laid. There is no way in hell I'll ever let something happen to Shinya, I'll do whatever it takes to keep him safe.
“Are you okay?” I startle at the sudden words a bit. I look over to where Toshiya is sitting, leaning his back against a tree, keeping watch.
“I'm fine.” I say as I get up and walk over to where he is. “I'll take the next shift you can go to sleep.”
“You sure you're fine? You're drenched in sweat!” He said looking at my face and neck.
“Yeah I'm sure.”
“You should go back to sleep. I can stay up for at least another hour or so.”
“I'm fully awake.” I mumble. “It's your turn to rest.”
“Well actually Shinya is suppose to take watch after me, you're already done with your shift for the night.” He said trying not to be smug about it.
I couldn't help but look back at Shinya sleeping heavily on the ground, not a care in the world was placed on his young face.
“We can let him sleep. He deserves it after what you put him through today. Fuck I'm surprised he can even sleep.”
I could see Toshiya's face crease with remorse. I knew that fucker was sorry for it, but that didn't mean I would let it go so easily. I mean the bastard sat and watched the that fucking zombie try to eat Shinya and did nothing about it. And now knowing he left his younger siblings to fight for themselves when they came under attack, meant there was no way in hell I was actually going to trust this asshole anytime soon.
“I guess if you insist on staying up we can take a shift together.” I say as I sat next to him, leaning forward with my arms resting on my knees.
“Mm, I guess it'll be less scary that way too.” I rolled my eyes and slightly scoffed at his comment.
We both fell silent, there was absolutely no noise tonight. No twigs snapping, no leafs crunching, and most of all no snarls or growls from those mindless zombies. It makes me feel a bit uneasy. I wonder if the zombies have finally discovered the ability to be noiseless, they could just stumble around this tree completely quiet and take a bite out of my arm before I noticed it. I pull my arms closer to my body at the thought. I wish Shinya would have picked up a dog instead of that damn cat, at least those have super hearing or something. Wait, don't cats have that too? What if Shinya's cat hears a noise that we didn't and goes to it? Shinya would surely follow after her and then he'd get attacked by a zombie...and. Fuck, I need to stop. I'm getting myself worked up about nothing.
I look over at Toshiya, he seems bored out of his mind. His chin resting on the palm of his hand with his cheeks puffed out.
“What were their names?” I ask.
“Huh?” He looks over at me, he seems a bit shocked I said something to him.
“Your little sister and brother.”
“Oh.” He pauses for a while. “My sister's name is Naoki and my brother's name is Michio.” He finally answers in a small voice.
“They sound like good kids.” I mumbled not really knowing where to go from there.
“They were, I wish I knew them better though. I was already grown and out of the house when they were born. I was so wrapped up in my life, I hardly had anything to do with my family.”
“What was so important in your personal life that you couldn't find time for your own family?” I asked a little disgusted that he took his family for granted.
“My boyfriend.” I could see Toshiya clench his jaw shut after the word rolled off his tongue, even in the dim moon light. He quickly turned his head away from me. Obviously he was embarrassed.
“I mean..” He trailed off as he started to rubbed the back of his neck.
“You don't have to be embarrassed about it.” I say flatly.
He looks down at the ground. “I didn't know if you were the homophobic type or not.”
I let out an over dramatic snort.
“What?” Toshiya asked turning to look at me.
“How can I be homophobic if I play for the same team too?” I see his cheeks heat up.
“I..I didn't mean anything by it! I didn't know! I-I mean you don't seem the type..”
“I don't seem the type?” I asked as if I was appalled. But really it was just funny to see him stumble with his words.
“No no no.. I mean..I just can't picture you with another man! I-I mean
dating a man not,” Toshiya held up both his index fingers and poked them together.
I held up my index fingers and repeated what he did with a confused face.
“I-it means...never mind..” Toshiya's face was a dark shade of red, even in this light, due to his embarrassment. It was too easy to fuck with him.
I shrugged my shoulders and crossed my arms over my stomach. Toshiya went back to his pose, chin in hand and puffed out cheeks. It fell silent again until Toshiya stood.
“Where are you going?” I asked him.
“Oh, I have to pee.” He answer pointing with his thumb behind him.
I shake my head a bit looking back forward. I watched Toshiya walk away from the corner of my eye. My gaze drifts to Shinya, who's still sleeping. I watch him breathe lightly for a while before my gaze drops to his kitten, making me remember my dream. What if I end up getting infected? Shinya basically said earlier that his survival is on my shoulders. So, what if I get infected... will they be able the kill me? Or would I be able to kill myself before turning? What would Shinya do without me?
My thoughts are interrupted when Toshiya sits back down next to me. “Have a nice piss?”
“I guess...” He pauses for a moment like he's contemplating wither or not he should say whats on his mind. “Kyo..” He trails off.
“What?”
“How did you end up alone? Before
Shinya tagged along.”
“The same why everyone else did.”
“Did you loose someone?”
“It's none of your business.”
“So you did lose someone.”
“Of course I did. What part of 'The same way as everyone else did' did you not understand?” I said a little venomous.
“And after all these months nobody ever wanted to join you before?”
“That fucking brat over there forced himself to come. I told him I didn't want to have baggage but he still followed me like a fucking lost puppy.” I spat at him.
Toshiya let out a small laugh.
“What?” I asked a little irritated now at the retard sitting next to me.
“You know Kyo, you're not that bad once a person gets used to you.” He laughed out lightly. “So much for being a bad ass right?” He said lightly elbowing me in the arm.
I ignored him, wishing I had never conversed with him in the first place.
“So what made you decide to allow Shinya to come along with you instead of out right throwing him as a distraction to any forthcoming zombies?”
I shrugged, “Could you?”
“So it's true.”
“Hmm? What is?” I asked now curious.
“That you just don't like me, or Tina.”
I shook my head, “It's true.”
“But Shinya is that one exception huh?” He laughed.
“I guess so.”
“Well, I'm getting tired. I think I'm going to go to sleep now. You going to be okay by yourself?”
I shoot him an annoyed look, he smirks to himself and walks over to where Shinya is sleeping. I watch as he lays next to Shinya, obstructing my view of him. I feel a bit uneasy not being able to see Shinya but I don't say anything.
I sit in the quiet, completely absorbed in my surroundings, trying my best to hear even the slightest rustle of a tree branch blowing in the wind, despite me being half deaf. I couldn't even hear the crickets chirp or cicadas buzz anymore. It seemed as if the bugs were affected by the zombies as well, too afraid to make a noise, or to show themselves. I hated bugs before this, but what I wouldn't do just to see one. Just one. It would mean a step back to normalcy for me. But who was I kidding? Nothing could ever be normal after this. Nothing.
After a few somber hours the sun finally began to peak through the mesh of trees. I know I should wake Toshiya and Shinya up so we could get moving, but I wanted to sit and watch the sun rise, though I'll never admit it to anybody. Watching the sunrise was something him and I did on Saturdays. As stupid as it might seem, he rather enjoyed it, and it never failed that every Saturday morning he'd be shaking me awake and dragging my tired ass out to the front porch to watch the sun slowly make it's way over the tops of buildings. I hated it, but now I wish for it. Since this all happened, I've kept a close count on the days so I know when to watch it, hoping that somewhere, he'd be watching too.
My attention goes over to where the two are sleeping, Shinya is sitting up rubbing his eyes.
“Shouldn't we get moving, Kyo? The sun is already coming up. Why didn't you wake us?”
“I thought you would like to sleep in after what happened yesterday.” I lied as I continue to wait and watch for the sun to fully come up.
“Oh, well I'm fine we should start going.” Shinya said as he shook Toshiya awake. I shake my head, usually I would wait until the sun was fully sitting in the sky, like what me and him did every Saturday, but I guess its time to put it behind me. The chances of him watching it too were far fetch, plus all it did was waste time and cause my heart to ache.
“I want to take a bath.” Toshiya said sitting up and stretching his arms over his head. “Don't we all.” Shinya sarcastically said.
I couldn't help but smile at Shinya. I never thought I'd hear sarcasm come out of his mouth.
“Well Shinya,” Toshiya sarcastically began to reply. “If I remember correctly and we're in the right part of the woods a river is that way.” He pointed behind himself.
“Gross.” Shinya said as he reached and grabbed the bag of food and pulled it closer to him. “What's so gross about it?” Toshiya said scooting closer Shinya to look inside the bag.
“Uh, fish poop and die in there.”
“Sometimes you gotta not think of what's bad Shinya.” I said popping into the conversation. “Besides I grabbed the bars of soap from that bathroom before we left.”
“Ah thinking smart Kyo.” Toshiya said smiling. “We have a lot to learn from him Shinya.” Shinya smiled and nodded his head forward.
“It has nothing to do with you two being clean or anything I'd just rather not smell your body odor.”
“Either way you were thinking of us.” Shinya laughed as he pulled as stale cracker out of a box and attempted to feed it to Tina.
Okay, so maybe I was thinking of them, well at the time only Shinya.
After everyone ate and Tina had a cracker shoved down her throat, curiosity of Shinya, we packed up and left to find the river. It wasn't long, maybe thirty minutes or so, when we finally came across the river. It was a rather quiet walk, Shinya didn't even hum. I'm not sure why, but it was really bothering me that he no longer hummed. Didn't he say it reminded him of his mom or some shit like that? Maybe he's finally putting it behind him? I'm not sure, I might ask if the right timing comes.
We're standing by the river getting ready to bathe. Shinya is testing the water with his hand and I'm knelt down getting soap out of the bag. Toshiya comes out from behind a bush where he was undressing. I look over and quickly look away, feeling my face heat up.
“Alright, ladies, stand aside. Toshiya needs to bathe.” I see Shinya narrow his eyes at him.
He walks by and grabs the bar of soap I had out of my hand, asshole, and climbs into the river. I stand up and undress, joining Toshiya in the river, the water stands to about mid-stomach..at least it does for me. I look over at Shinya who's sitting with Tina.
“Shinya aren't you going to wash?” I ask.
“What if Tina runs off while I'm in there?”
“He wont run off, Shinya, cats always hang around their owners. Or just zip her in a bag or something.”
Shinya shoots me a nasty look. “I'm not zipping her in a bag, Kyo.”
“Then just set her there, she'll stay.”
Shinya rolls his eyes at me, when the fuck did I pick up a teenager with attitude? Regardless he sets the cat down and walks behind the bush, that Toshiya undressed behind. I look away not wanting to make him feel uncomfortable. After awhile I glance behind me to see Shinya coming with his clothes piled in a ball in front of his lower parts.
“No one look as I get in the river.” Shinya told us, or I guess it went for any zombies that might have been around.
"Shinya, no one wants to see your naked ass anyways.” Toshiya told him.
“What ever Toshiya, no one wants to see yours!” Shinya shot back a little childishly.
"Shinya... who wouldn't want to see this?” Toshiya raised his arms above his head and started wiggling his hips. “That's gross, there's no girls here, even if there was they still wouldn't want to see that!”
Toshiya stopped and starting laughing. “That's fine with me! I don't care if girls would like it or not!” Shinya gave a puzzled look.
“What?”
Toshiya puts his hand on his hip and jerks it out to the side, leaning more on one leg.
“Come on Shinya...”
Shinya narrows his eyes for a second before widening them.
“O-oh, oh! I see. You like guys?”
Toshiya begins to rub the back of his neck.
“Yeah. Yeah I like guys, Shinya.”
Shinya shakes his head in an acknowledging way.
“Well I'm straight.” He looks over at me.
“And I'm the tooth fairy, now can we finish washing before a group of zombies come while we are exposed?”
“So does that mean you're gay? Cause the tooth fairy seems a bit-”
"Hey!” I cut him off.
