The Grudge (American)

I hope that is it okay that I comment on this movie here, as it is neither obscure or really foreign. :) However considering the nature of this LJ I will speak openly about the original(s). Those of you who have *not* seen the original(s) can just muddle along ( Read more... )

Nice review! Remakes are okay to discuss and post about in moderation, since they're remakes of movies that DO pertain to the community. ;)

I was happy they were gonna do the missing jaw bit too, because that was pretty fun (nobody else got quite THAT screwed over by the curse, except maybe that kid in Ju-on 2 (the 4th movie) that got chased around the school by a speedy army of Kayakos, but the special FX for the jaw bit were lacking at the time of the original. So, yay for special FX budget, if nothing else.

Hey aethyr (or anyone else reading this in the know), was there anyone in the whole Ju-on series who became 'marked for death' who did NOT go to the House? I was under the impression that going to the House was the thing that made someone a victim of the curse.

I ask because in the remake the character of the sister never went to the House like she did in the original, but Kayako snarked her anyways, and that bothered me. But if just calling the House and leaving a message on the answering machine is good enough, then I guess I have to be satisfied with that. :)

Hey aethyr (or anyone else reading this in the know)

Feel free to call me Nat, btw ;)

was there anyone in the whole Ju-on series who became 'marked for death' who did NOT go to the House?

(SPOILERS follow for anyone who may be reading this who hasn't seen Ju-on 2)

The actress in Juon 2 (the original 2, not 4) as far as I'm aware didn't go into the house until *after* she was cursed. If I remember correctly, they drove *past* the house and "ran over" (I say it in quotes since it was already dead anyway...) the cat, and then Toshio appeared under the steering wheel and swerved the car into crashing and that's when she miscarried and he and Kayako took over the fetus or whatever, and her boyfriend/fiancé went into the coma. It was later she went into the house itself.

It seems like close contact with someone who was cursed sometimes snags you too, by proxy. I never did a tally or anything though, so I'm not sure if I can say that with complete certainty.

The sister actually did go to the house. When she and her brother were checking out the house with the mom, she was there with them. So she actually did go inside.

I've seen Ju-on but not the Grudge. It's sad because I saw Ju-on only a few months ago and I don't remember the missing jaw bit. Can you refresh my memory?

It prolly wasn't in the one you saw. :) Do you know the 'continuity' of the 4 Ju-on movies? Anyways the jaw thing was in the FIRST Ju-on, not the theatrical version. It was like, a tv movie in Japan that was so popular they made a theatrical one. Both versions got sequels (neither of which I've seen, though I have them). Therefore there are 4 Ju-ons. :) Hope that makes SOME sense. ;)

Ahhh I see. I knew of the whole TV/Movie series of Ju-on films, but I haven't seen them all, so that DOES explain it. Hooray :D

I think they did a decent job explaining why they were in Japan. Gellar's character was there because of her boyfriend. The wife in the grocery store was there because of her husband's job. The only thing I think they should have built more of a story behind is why the old woman was in Japan.
