He sighs as he stares out the window. His gaze wanders to the early morning sky. The glass begins to fog a bit. He turns away to clean his glasses. The train’s steady humming reminds him of Yuto. He glances at his watch and looks at the train’s doors. He’d be here soon.

He distracts himself by checking his bag to see if he forgot to study something in advance. He ends up reviewing his Korean dictionary. Yamada chuckles to himself as he tries to pronounce the words. Then he hears the train doors slide open and Yuto steps in.

Yuto catches his eye. He mumbles a good morning and Yamada greets him back in Korean. Yuto raises his eyebrow, but then he sees the book in the other boy’s hands and he rolls his eyes. Yuto takes the seat across Yamada. He checks his bag and takes out his earphones. Yamada smirks when Yuto starts tapping his foot.

“Stop that,” Yamada mouths. Yuto shakes his head. “I’ll do whatever I want,” He mouths back. So Yamada shrugs and goes back to his ‘studying’. After learning five words or so he glances at Yuto still drumming on air. Yamada smiles sadly because he knows more people will fill up the empty spaces in the train, and Yuto will have to stop and behave. Yuto senses him staring and looks at Yamada. He frowns a bit. He knows it too.

Yamada motions Yuto to move closer. Yuto grabs his bag and slides across the train’s floor before plopping down beside Yamada.

“Showoff,” Yamada says.

“You’re just jealous because it’s something you can’t do,” Yuto replies.

Yamada gives Yuto a shove.

“Screw you,” Yuto says.

Yamada answers back in Korean- again- so Yuto ignores him and goes back to tapping his foot. They both smile, because this is how they start their days. Sometimes it makes Yuto wonder how they’ve stayed friends for so long even if they’ve both changed so much.

“Yuto-kun, we’re almost there,” Yamada says suddenly breaking their silence.

“As if I don’t know that. We’ve only been taking the same train since forever,” Yuto says.

“Just saying, idiot,” Yamada replies. Yuto stands up.

“Let’s go, Yama-chan,” Yuto says. Yamada gets up and when they reach the train stops, they both walk off the train. They stop for a while as they watch the train leave. They watch it rushing past them until the noise wakes them up from their little trance.

They walk to school in silence. It would seem almost awkward, but they’ve always been like this. The silence is like a blanket. Like a secret hidden from the rest of the world. Yamada blows into the air. It really is getting cold. He glances at Yuto again. Yuto gives him a questioning look. Yamada shakes his head.

It’s nothing.

They walk to school and soon they lose themselves in the group of students. Yamada sighs as he sits on his desk. His eyes begin to close and Chinen has to wake him up moments later so he doesn’t miss the Math class.

It’s a pair thing and he’s shocked when Yuto sits down beside him.

“What on earth, Yuto-kun?” Yamada mumbles.

“I’m your partner?” Yuto says. “Of course if you want me to switch with Chinen that’s fine with me.”

Yamada gapes at Yuto. “What are you saying?”

Yuto shrugs. “I figured you were going out so you’d want to be around him all the time. Not that you aren’t already but you know.”

Yamada blinks repeatedly. “I am not dating Chinen,” Yamada whispers.

“Okay,” Yuto says frowning at the paper full of numbers.

“Seriously Yuto-kun, I am not!” Yamada says.

Yuto suddenly bursts into and Yamada realizes the younger boy was kidding.

“Oh I hate you, Yuto-kun,” Yamada hisses when the boy continues laughing. The other classmates stare at the two who have clearly lost it.

Chinen smirks and apologizes to the teacher saying the heat of the spotlight had finally driven them insane.

Yuto tries to muffle his laughter as he quickly answers the math problems. Yamada glares daggers at him as he points out what to do every now and then. When Yuto gets up at the end of the period, he takes one last look at Yamada and smiles. Yamada gives Yuto an angry look.

“You know,” Yuto starts. “If you don’t like Chinen then who do you like, Yamada?”

Yamada sighs. “I don’t know.”

Yuto raises an eyebrow. “Could it be me?”

Yamada glances up at Yuto, whose expression is so ridiculous Yamada can’t keep a straight face.

“You wish,” Yamada says smiling. “Now get lost.”

Yuto smiles even wider. Yamada’s forgiven him.

Yuto walks back to his seat. He glances back and sees Yamada looking in his bag. He turns back and forces himself to concentrate. Lunch break comes quickly. He eats with Shougo and Kamiki and from their spot he sees Yamada laughing with Irie.

“Yuto,” Shougo says.

“Hm?” Yuto replies, turning back to his food.

“What’s with you two anyway?” Shougo asks.

“Who?”

“You and Yamada,” Kamiki chirps.

“Nothing,” Yuto says.

Shougo stares at Yamada. He frowns. “I don’t get it.”

“Don’t get what?” Yuto asks.

Kamiki shakes his head. “I don’t get it either.”

“Why are you friends anyway? It doesn’t make sense,” Shougo says.

Yuto looks shocked. “What is this? A magazine interview? He’s nice.”

“Nice?” Kamiki repeats.

Shougo sighs. “One day we’ll find out.”

Yuto has a puzzled look on his face but he lets the topic slide. He remembers glancing at Yamada once more and he sees Yamada looking back at him. Yuto feels something stirring in his chest. He shrugs it off.

The rest of the afternoon slips past him and he finds himself still sitting at his desk as the rest of his classmates leave the room. He keeps staring at the board. It’s bothering him. Something he can’t seem to pinpoint. He refuses to leave unless the frustration in him disappears.

Then Yamada appears out of nowhere.

“Hey,” He says knocking on Yuto’s desk. “It’s time to go.”

Yuto stares at him and Yamada stares back.

“Why are we friends?” Yuto blurts out.

“Excuse me?” Yamada says, taken aback.

“Why are we friends?” Yuto repeats.

Yamada looks confused. “Why not? Because we’re not as close as we used to be? Because we don’t hang out that often? Because we’re so different? Is that it?”

He stops.

“We,” Yuto says pointing to them. “We make no sense,” Yuto says quietly. ‘Why are we friends?” Yuto says for the third time.

Yamada tries to look for an answer but he realizes he can’t think of anything. Why can’t he think of anything?

He panics and it scares him so much he feels like crying.

Yuto gets up and grabs his bag. Yamada bites his lip and straightens up. Yuto’s still looking at him with those piercing eyes. Yamada doesn’t know how long they stand there just staring at each other, looking for answers. Then Yamada train of thought when Yuto’s lips suddenly crash into his. He finds himself kissing back. They close their eyes and Yuto feels that thing in his chest.

Yamada can’t explain it but he knows. He just knows.

I like you.

Yuto still can’t grasp the turn of events and he’s shocked when Yamada kisses him again. And again. And again. Yuto gives in because this is making more sense than usual which is unbelievable considering what was happening.

I really really like you.

His heart is beating in his chest and the world becomes clearer.

We’re…?

They break apart, and this time Yuto kisses Yamada’s hair softly on before pulling him into an embrace.

We’re.

He smiles because it’s starting to make sense to him. To both of them.

We are.
