Control (2007) takeitez warned me that black & white photography is highly correlated with trickery on the part of the artist. here I thought the subterfuge was to convince the viewer that the footage is real.
it was shot beautifully, as only a still photographer could. I'm not at all sure I can even attempt a dispassionate review, as I am an unabashed fan of the music.
instead, I'll just say I liked the movie, and proceed directly to explaining that my inherent distrust of biographical stories stems from the simplifications, reductions, and outright fabrications from the storyteller. by the time the viewer gets it, it's been interpreted by the actors, through the director, from the screenwriter, by way of the author, who may or may not have been telling the whole story.
with fiction, the only thing at stake is the writer's vision. with a biography, there are real people who lived through actual events, and there is a responsibility to depict it truthfully as well as accurately.
