The problem between wasn't so much Jim as it was their vices dovetailed more nicely than their virtues. Pam's cowardice and Roy's blindness geared together in perfect traction years before Jim arrives on the scene.
Jim and Pam are kindred spirits in the best sense of the world, but wouldn't be soulmates if Roy watched a little more Oprah and Pam a little more Dr. Phil.
Honestly it is a crying shame because Roy and Pam could have easily had a healthy life long love-- both of them are loyal, dependable, and solid people.
Roy was willing to work on his faults and the mistakes in the relationship when Pam finally started to show some steel in her spine-- it was just too little, too late.
