Soo... I was adamant that this would actually get posted on Anja's birthday. But the betas came back early and there I was, twiddling my thumbs, desperately trying to convince myself, "Anja would love to get an early birthday present, wouldn't she?"
I have mad persuasion skillz when it comes to things I shouldn't do. Therefore, happy birthday

Mine, immaculate dream
Made breath and skin, I've been waiting for you
Signed with a home tattoo
"Happy birthday to you" was created for you
(Can't ever keep from falling apart at the seams)
(Can't believe you're taking my heart to pieces)
Ah, it'll take a little time
Might take a little crime to come undone
Now we'll try to stay blind to the hope and fear outside
Hey child, stay wilder than the wind
And blow me in to cry -
Who do you need?
Who do you love?
When you come undone?
Words, playing me déjà vu
Like a radio tune I swear I've heard before
Chill, is it something real
Or the magic I'm feeding off your fingers
(Can't ever keep from falling apart at the seams)
(Can't believe you're taking my heart to pieces)
Lost in a snow-filled sky
We'll make it all right to come undone
Now we'll try to stay blind to the hope and fear outside
Hey child, stay wilder than the wind
And blow me in to cry -
Who do you need?
Who do you love?
When you come undone?
Notes
Vid in a nutshell
Brian is the ultimate unreliable narrator, all sex and swagger, brutally honest to everybody but himself. "Who do you need, who do you love, when you come undone?" he asks Justin smugly at the end of the first chorus. By the end of the song, he poses the exact same question. But he is now sitting alone in a hospital corridor, tears streaming down his face, and the question is no longer directed at Justin. This vid hopefully paints the path from point A to point B.
Editing, etc.
QAF is such a fun source to play with. The in-your-face effects and camerawork makes piecing-together very easy, quick and fun; the hardest thing about it is trying to pick insanely awesome clips out of 30,000 others that are equally awesome.
A while ago
wistful_fever was talking about emotional responses to colours. I think colour use to a large extent is dictated by custom, but it's also interesting how certain contexts can subvert that. What I liked about the use of blue tones in QAF is that, yes, to a large extent it is about alienation and wistfulness and those standard meanings, but in the case of Brian/Justin it's also about a sense of sanctuary. It's telling that, even at the end, Brian brings Justin into his world of blue instead of Justin taking him out of it. Using blue in this way invokes a sense of "us against the world", which feels rather appropriate for this couple.
Tech
Most effects are inherent in source or created to mimic source. Some colour adjustment regarding blue tones mentioned above. Also the first time in quite a while where I didn't tear my hair out tech-wise, in large part thanks to
absolut3destiny's recent
post on avisynth memory problems in Premiere.
