They’d almost done it. They’d found the command override, and almost, almost reversed it. They’d just been that little too late and now…

“Incoming wormhole!” Sam yells and they fall back; her, Teal’c and Baal. She knows they’re going to be outnumbered, and wishes she had another gun to give to the Goa’uld. The thought startles her, but then the event horizon mushrooms out and all her attention shifts.

Ori soldiers pour through. She fires and takes down one, two… but more just take their place. They are all going to die.

“Hold them here!” Baal shouts, as if her and Teal’c are somehow managing to keep back the tide. “I'll get help.”

An army would help. She glances back as he stands, turns… and is immediately hit. His cry makes her blood run cold, though she’s not sure why. And it was a pointless sacrifice anyway: Cam has clearly heard the commotion and he and Vala charge out of the cave, weapons firing. There’s no sign of Daniel.

Sam doesn’t have time to worry: clouds are rolling in, obliterating the clear sky. Lightning flickers through the clouds, then strikes the soldiers, killing them. She stands slowly, not comprehending how. Except…

Daniel comes flying out of the cave, followed by Adria. Sam’s brief surge of hope dies and she knows this is it. The Orici will kill them now. But Daniel isn’t done and even though she’s seen him Ascend, even though she’s seen him come back from the dead more than once, nothing has prepared her for the power he exhibits now.

“Get through the gate, now!”

She doesn’t want to leave without him, but Cam grabs Vala and drags her away as the ‘Gate shuts down. They don’t leave their people behind.

“I'll be right behind you!” Daniel shouts.

“Sam!” Cam yells. He hits the central button and reactivates the ‘Gate. “Come on!”

Teal’c turns to the ‘Gate, but she hesitates. There’s nothing she can do to help Daniel and that hurts. She can’t leave him, but she must. Fury rises and it’s then that her gaze falls on Baal again. She moves before she’s even conscious of making a decision.

He’s not dead, just stunned. She grabs a handful of his coat and hauls him to his feet.

“Come on.”

“But-”

“Now!” She glares at him. “I’m not going to lose someone else.”

His face is troubled but he nods. They scramble across to the ‘Gate, where Teal’c stands guard. He arches one eyebrow at her inclusion of their former enemy, but makes no move to prevent him passing through.

They’re arrival in Stargate Command is a barrage of guns aimed in their direction. In Baal’s direction. The soldiers hold their fire, because Sam is too close. She steps forward and slightly to one side, blocking their line of fire further.

“Hold your fire,” she says. Her gaze lifts to the observation room, where Landry is staring at her in shock. “Please.”

“Lower your weapons,” Landry orders. “Get him into a containment cell.”

“Don’t fight them,” Sam mutters to Baal as soldiers approach warily. He looks at her, a slight frown on his face.

“Why?” he asks, and she knows the question isn’t about why he should surrender now.

Sam doesn’t have an answer. All she knows is that Daniel isn’t on the ramp. That knowledge hangs on her heart.

She’s failed. Failed to get them home safe before the Ori attacked, failed to bring her friend back with her. Bringing an enemy to the SGC, even one that has helped them in his own way, doesn’t begin to make up for those failures, and might even by another failure, but she cannot contemplate any other decision than the one she did.

Shaking her head, she tells him, “I don’t know. I just couldn’t let someone else down.”

He holds his hands out to the first soldier, not fighting as the major fastens cuffs around his wrists. Actually, he pays absolutely no attention - his eyes are on her face, narrowed thoughtfully. The soldiers flank him, but still he holds her gaze.

“It wasn’t your fault, Samantha.”

She watches him walk away. Despite the cuffs and the soldiers flanking him, he still manages to appear as being the one in control. The sight brings a wry smile to her lips. She wonders what Landry is making of this, how much crap she’s going to get for a choice made in a moment of hurt and confusion. She walks down the ramp.

Cam holds a softly weeping Vala. Whatever he thinks of her saving Baal, he keeps it from showing in his expression. Teal’c is as stoic as ever, but as she passes him, he tilts his head in acknowledgement. He, at least, understands her decision and is probably proud of it - even though saving Baal is going to cause no end of problems for the SGC and the IOA, that doesn’t make it the wrong choice.

Hopefully, she can persuade her superiors of that fact as well.
