Hmm, how about "washoffable" water base paint labels? They could be sprayed on with a type of ink jet printer, using soy based ink.

Yes, I was thinking of that. But some fruit (tangerines) have lumpy skin and it might be hard to read/scan. I was thinking of a kind of spray-on barcode for fruit where you don't eat the skin AND its smooth. Or something compostible so you could throw it away into the compost attached (my compost has lots of little plastic labels in it too).

Soy-based ink... now that's a step in the right direction.

I remember seeing a thing on the news, how they're experimenting with using lasers to print the bar code/number information on the skin of the fruit. It scars it slightly- but no more than a small cut would normally do. No chemicals or foriegn substances needed.

Over here in Europe our labels are paper... still annoying, and still get stuck everywhere but at least they do come off and do compost

hello. I added you recently!

I hate those stickers too. The awful thing is sometimes they stick to peaches and plums and I have had to cut them off, leaving an open wound on the fruit in my kids' lunches!

Oh, yes! Or a torn piece of missing skin (on plums, yesterday).

I think the printing on fruit idea is encouraging.

How old are your kids btw? I have frost (5) and Wren (3 mos)

I saw that response to your post, and printing on fruit is interesting for sure.
