AU Background: In canon, Link is born a boy in the middle of a war, long forgotten, leaving the land torn. But not in this one. For you see, something happened by small chance: Link's mother, whose name we do not know, had a daughter. She fled to the forest, urging the Great Deku Tree, the spirit dwelling there, to raise and care for her child.

The problem first began because then and there was when the woman died, without ever clarifying the child's gender.

Luckily, the children of the forest, long hidden in the depths of the woods of Hyrule, untouched by outsiders and their war, did not age, and they did not discriminate much. ... Well, not as much as those who dwelled outside the borders of the sacred, protected woods. From her birth, Link was named and assumed male and that was that, for the Kokiri did not care for gender specification, ever. Women and men were equal and when all was said, they would all never grow up to be that different, anyway, and they dressed similarly, so why be troubled? Thus, as a child, Link was not. She did not bother to correct people about her gender or much else; why should she?

As in canon, her adventure began after she turned ten years of age. Plagued by terrible premonitions of a horrible man on a black horse and a girl fleeing before him, outside a castle, her sleep was not sound. One day, she awoke to a fairy named Navi, who would become her partner, guardian, and best friend. Sometimes even her translator, both for her and for others to her. Nudging her, ever so gently, to do the right thing. As I have linked the canon info above, I won't cover what happens here, only how it affects Link.

For starters, Saria was her first love of sorts, and at the time, she did not realize girls could not like other girls, and that gender was important. What was 'boy' or 'girl'; why did it matter? ... However, once she left the safety of her forest, armed to the teeth after her first major battle, the brave, but shy young girl learned very quickly that boys were better and girls were petite and quiet and not adventurous. She learned from villagers that she was a girl, the differences, and so on--things that she had never much gained in the forest.

When she met the rancher, Malon, she allowed herself to be called 'Fairy Boy,' because she didn't seen reason in correcting her. When she met the Princess, young like her, named Zelda, why should she ever point out that she was female? As a child, more important things were in her mind--saving Hyrule and helping Zelda stop Ganondorf, for example, the evil Gerudo King. She would frequently call Saria, telling her of her exploits, asking how she was. Sometimes, when she had time, she returned to the forest with masks and such to let everyone know she was okay, and to see Saria in person.

Slowly, she gathered her wits. She grew, both in wisdom and in strength, and she slowly became less and less present at her once home, much to the sadness of those there, as her quest became more fierce and compelling. Never once did she, as a child, truly stop to think that... maybe, being a hero was not for a girl. No, she only thought of helping others. Like the Gorons, who adopted her as their brother. Or the Zoras, who (mistakenly), their Princess believed... was, well, a boy, and wanted to marry her.

After quite a few long and arduous adventures (one in the stomach of a whale, no less!), she gathered what was necessary, and was met with her premonition becoming reality as she approached the castle only to meet Ganondorf, and see Zelda flee forever from her life. She would retrieve the Ocarina of Time and go into the town near the castle, into the Temple of Time there, and play the Song of Time, opening the door to the Sacred Realm. There, as in canon, Ganon would use it to seize power and Link would be trapped behind the confines of the Master Sword's spell.

The Spirits did not believe her to be proper as the Hero of Time, at such a young age. Ten was not old enough, thus, for seven long years, she remained suspended in that realm. However, some very important things happened during those long years that are not detailed in canon. For starters, Link aged slowly. She was taught much, as she matured, but never that being open about her gender was bad. In that realm, while suspended there, she trained, and trained hard. She would master her new body, her new sword and the larger shield she'd gotten. She would be given new clothing and she would become adept in everything she had.

Her knowledge grew, as did her confidence. While she lacked a 'real' seven years of maturity, she had a false one. The surroundings were not real, but nonetheless... she had seven long years of being a normal child. The illusion was a daily routine, wherein she lived in the castle market and learned of the ways of one her age. However, in all her time, her shyness... did not, precisely, disappear. When she reawakened, she had... become the hero they had desired. Realizing slowly that she had been in suspended animation most of the time and that the memories she had were false, the change in her body came as a shock, but her maturity, however, stayed clear. The one thing she learned, however, was that her body was something--as an adult--very different than what a man's was.

She would then continue her quest, as in canon, but things slowly started to... unravel, for her. You see, Link had a problem, and it was not something she could fix. ... She was female. When she rediscovered Hyrule in ruins, she was devastated. Shiek and Navi guided her to her home, the forest, and... no one recognized her, now an older woman.

Kokiri, you see, are not supposed to age. Not only that, but she found herself disbelieved by all, and her home under siege by monsters. She did manage to save them, but it was too late for Saria--she had died as is implied in canon to take her place as a Sage. Thus others remained.

Slowly, Link went through her journey... and when she went from village to village, at first, as a woman, she learned that it was... difficult, to earn respect. Time and time again, she found herself thrown out of places, disbelieved, and disrespected. It all came to a head when she went to the Goron city, wherein the Goron Darunia had named after her disbelieved her to be the 'hero' of which he'd been named (Link), because she was a woman. Naturally... she left. Upset, in tatters. As a child of the forest who didn't understand gender differentiation and how poorly women in a medieval world were treated, Link was devastated. It was always the same story--the "Hero of Time" was expected to be a MAN, the person whispered of to defeat and restore Hyrule... because it was not the "Heroine of Time", and no one would ever stop to think, not even Link herself, that a hero can still be a girl.

From her constant treatment by the male and some of the female population of Hyrule, she eventually took extreme measures. She took her blade, and cut her long blonde hair short. She pierced her ear. She even began wearing extra layers of bandages under her clothing, so as to make herself look flat in the chest. She made sure that no one could tell from a glance, or even hearing her, she was female. It wasn't easy, but it was necessary, she felt. Perhaps it could have been avoided, but Link thought otherwise.

This done, she threw herself into saving the land. Slowly, one temple at a time, she gathered and saved the sages, going back and forth between the times of her childhood and her teenage years, always pleased to return to being younger, where she was not bothered and was still undeveloped. The only one who really knew was Navi, her fairy companion, sworn to secrecy.

Otherwise, everything else would go as in canon up until near the end of the Spirit Temple, the last one. She had braved them all, fearing nothing. Though one thing would be a bit different: she would find quite a bit of camaraderie with the infamous Gerudo clan of thieves, all women, who, after catching her and finding out she was a girl, liked her spunk and her boldness enough to make her an honorary member. She'd then proceed to beat all their games, even going as far as to visit them more than her home, in that timeline.

It's from midway to completing the Spirit Temple she'll be pulled from, after returning to the Gerudo Valley as an Adult and getting the Gauntlets.

Personality: Link, for the most part, has similar a personality to her male, canon self. Fearless (nearly, though I ought to mention social fears are her big problem with her gender and all, she fears being discovered), courageous, bold, and unwavering in her quest to help save every last soul, even if she barely knows them. Of course, there are some key differences, and they are VERY important to her character. Aside from, you know, having boobs and being really weird about how she carries herself. The first is that, yes, she speaks! I will be having her speak despite her silence in canon because I feel it's silly not having her speak. Silent protagonist or not.

Right, that out of the way...

To start with... she is, quite intentionally, androgynous in her speech, actions, and looks. She is neither muscular nor skinny, scrawny nor curvy. She is slightly shorter than her male self, and her voice is... hard to pinpoint as female unless she is EXTREMELY flustered (an unlikely situation) or embarrassed. This is all quite intentional, you see, as she has something of a complex about her gender. Quite simply? She hates being a girl. She hates being female, she hates it with all her heart. If she could make herself a boy, she would in an INSTANT--or, so she thinks. What she doesn't realize is that she simply hates that her gender is entrenched in what men consider weakness, when she is anything but.

Any look at our own history will tell you how unfairly us women are treated, and Link herself is a prime example of that. So often had she been told after waking up seven years later that she could not be telling the truth, could not be this or that, that she... eventually gave up openly admitting to her gender. As a result, she is prone to hiding it and would rather deny to her death that she is female. She doesn't HATE men, or anything of the sort. No, she just... prefers freedom and being allowed to be a woman. This complex about her gender has led her to quite... a few extremes, like layering her underclothes so as to make herself appear and feel flat, cutting her long hair, dressing boyishly, and so on.

She is more prone to being emotional than her male counterpart, but that comes with the territory, of course--she didn't take the denial and everyone disbelieving her at Kokiri Forest, after she had come back years later, very well. Which is why, eventually, she would spend all her time with the Gerudos, a band of female thieves. As a result, she is light on her feet and PROBABLY the best shot with a bow in all Hyrule. She threw herself into training with each of her weapons and other useful items obtained over the course of the game, so much so that she has no trouble reacting to even the quickest attack. She is never without her bow and arrows, magic and all, nor any of the other junk she keeps on her person.

She has a bit of a soft spot for children and animals, particularly her horse, Epona, whom she rescued from the taken over Lon Lon Ranch, and a small, pocket-sized, blue rooster named Cojiro, whom she nursed back to happiness, as it never used to crow. It now does, every sunrise, and she is VERY proud of this fact. The chicken is always with her, as is her fairy, Navi.

Link is quite shy on the whole, particularly with people she doesn't know--her gender is a constant worry in the back of her mind, after all, and she feels if people found out she WASN'T male, she would be hated, disbelieved, or worse. Of course, this likely wouldn't happen, but the complex she has over this isn't very rational. It was an extreme built from sadness and worry, and it got her through her adventure up until this point, so it is what she resorts to at all times if possible. If found out, she would likely be flustered and confused, and her voice just might slip.

Another side to Link is how seriously she takes her title as "Hero of Time," believing it to mean she MUST help everyone who needs it (even if they only lost their cuccos--or chickens), and do it right away. If she fails to help someone or is too slow, she tends to be rather hard on herself inwardly about it. ... She also hates to lose, having a competitive streak a mile wide. There is nothing she likes better than beating someone at their own game. At the same time, of course, she is not the type to gloat all that much. ... It just isn't in her nature to, unless someone deserves it, and even then, she's never a sore loser. She will always congratulate the one who lost, or won, in her own way, and tends to be modest when referring to her own skills at times.

She's a bit of a Rupee, or money pincher as well, saving up huge loads of her world's currency and then spending it before she goes off to fight or go through a temple, always believing that it might "be needed". (Hint: she has the game's biggest wallet possible.) At some point, she mastered playing the Ocarina, and enjoys playing it in her spare time, but she especially loves learning those magic songs with Shiek, whom she is unaware of as secretly being Zelda, and miiiiight just have a bit (okay, not just a BIT) of a crush on. He's mysterious and kind, but every attempt she makes to talk to him, he disappears. It's unfortunate, but what can a girl do?

... She can master flaming and freezing archery, apparently, along with bottling healing fairies, milk, and blue potions, which she takes without qualm. She will eat or drink nearly anything because it just isn't in her to complain, really, unless she is having a bad day. Though... if you find out she's a girl, be prepared to be treated with denial, no matter how obvious. (Some would call this 'tsundere'.)

Being a sword-wielding, bow and arrow-toting adventurer, Link is adept with nearly any magic or nonmagic tool handed to her... but technology past her era will likely confuse her--she's a horse and foot transportation sort of girl, raised with fairies and as a child of the forest. Machines make no sense to her. She has several magic outfits that do various things, and she secretly enjoys wearing different ones, because she is something of a closet 'cute' fan on top of her love for animals. In her pockets, amongst her things, happens to be a mask called the Bunny Hood, which she rented from the Happy Mask shop. Why? ... She finds it adorable. It's sort of her secret guilty pleasure, the blue cucco and her bunny hood. She takes immaculate care of anything she owns, and tends to be a little disorganized (she lives with organized clutter, so to speak), but overall, she is always well prepared, well-meaning, and doing her best.

... Even if she seems to think that her 'best' means pretending she's a boy. But... well, no one's perfect, are they?

Abilities: Hoo boy, does she have a lot of abilities! Let me just list them by bullets, ahahahaha. I am not sure which will/will not be applying to Animus if she gets in, so... here we go!

• Swordsmanship. Her blade is magic and can't break and all that and pure light and stuff, by the way, so if you're evil or she really gets into it, it's gonna hurt.
• Shielding. She has a mirror shield that can reflect any light, as well as certain energy beam attacks, and block most hits while never being scratched.
• Archery. Not only is she dead accurate with a bow, but she has magic arrows. Fire and Ice, yes, you... may wanna just give up now.
• Magic. She can use Din's Fire, to create a huge field of flames. Nayru's Love to protect herself for a short period from any harm (NOTHING gets through it), and then Farore's Wind to transport herself to a previously selected place anywhere within a building. ... But only one place at a time. Otherwise, it must be canceled and replaced.
• Power Gauntlets. Her gloves allow her to lift weights like, twenty times her size...? I am talking SERIOUSLY HEFTY STUFF HERE. She's... a heroine okay?
• Magic Tunics. Her Goron (red) tunic allows her to withstand even the WORST heat, and her Zora (blue) tunic, combined with her iron boots, allow her to breathe underwater.
• Hookshot. Her Longshot can grapple into most wooden surfaces and support her entire weight. It's got a good distance, too, and is mechanically propelled, so not by magic.
• Special Boots. Her Iron Boots can allow her to weight three times more than normal if she wears them. Her Hover Boots allow her to hover on air using magic for a short amount of time (though their traction is... really terrible, sadly), meaning she can cross chasms with ease.
• Megaton Hammer. It's a hammer! And it's HEAVY by MAGIC! And it HITS STUFF! Yeah!!!!
• Triforce of Courage. ... It's hers yeah. It means NOTHING really scares her, I... guess?
• Magic Music. This won't work in Animus, but her Ocarina can play all sorts of magic songs that can do anything from change the time of day to make it rain to magically transport her to any temple in Hyrule. Oh, and it also plays a song that can reverse, double, or slow the flow of time but... I think that only works in Majora's Mask, so that doesn't count. Probably?
• Deku Stuff. Her Deku Stick is... a stick! She can... light on fire! Yeah! The Deku NUTS are more useful and serve kind of like primitive flashbang grenades, blinding anyone they're thrown at for a quick getaway.
• Acrobatics. Did I mention this girl can do backflips, roll, and jump side to side with ease? Seriously, it's ridiculous how limber her and her canon counterpart are holding a sword AND a shield.
• Bombs and Bombchus. ... As it sounds. She can explode stuff, and her Bombchus can actually... walk around and be aimed and THEN run and go explode something far away!
• Puzzle Solving. Seriously, this girl is smart. She can solve most puzzles, any day. She's just not great with SOCIAL ones.
• Lens of Truth. Her Lens of Truth, at the cost of a bit of magic (or her energy, I guess?), can see through any falsehood (visually). So, illusions and stuff? Not gonna work on this girl. (No, it does not see through people's clothes.)
• Silver Scale. She can hold her breath for long dives, even without her Zora tunic, thanks to this.
• Boomerang. The game logic holds she can't use but I say NONSENSE. So yeah, she can use her boomerang to hit and target stuff. She's a good shot with it, too.
• Magic Beans. ... Yeah, they... grow bean plants that float...
• Horse Riding Skills. She's pretty awesome on a horse, but I doubt this applies much. 8(
• Basic Combat. Even without her weapon, she's probably a menace. I'd be careful, if I were you, trying to hurt this girl. It'd be a painful lesson, literally.
• Elongated Health. Probably applies, but... she can be healed/revived via the pink fairies in her bottles and stuff. But only once. Doubt this applies here, though, it's more an RPG mechanic.

Sample Entry:

[ In the Library floor, perhaps you saw it. The short boy wearing a green floppy hat, with elven ears, in a tunic... poking at the terminal, as though it was going to bite him.

Every so often he would step back, as if on guard.

A fairy, blue in color, floated nearby, and finally, he sighed, deciding whatever the terminal WAS, it wasn't dangerous, so 'he' started mashing keys on it. Clearly the best plan, because ten minutes later, the same elf-looking person was suspiciously ABSENT from that terminal, and it appeared to be smoldering. In fact, said elven-looking newbie appeared to be VERY engrossed in a book elsewhere.

... And this is why technology and medieval elven fairy folk don't mix. ]

Have a musebox entry, too. Guys I'm so lazy I'M SORRY???
