I was so against debt, I've never even had a credit card. And slowly over the course of 3 years my "private art school education" has somehow whittled me down into thinking "eh, it's just money!" and getting more loans (after exhausting all other options of course).
I was thinking I would get out of school with just a little over 20k in debt, that number has now tripled. And I still have a year left. :/
True, I could have some full time job and be in school and freelance and try to build my career, but I don't think I'd be getting a full experience out of any of them.
Anyway this was just a small response to the debt thing...I see the (RED) crap everywhere and I've avoided investigating it until now.
i just want you to know that i think you are ridiculously talented. i can't believe you put out that magazine every week and write such great articles. seriously.
OSAP does create debt, yes, but it also allows students the opportunity to afford their education, as they may choose. It's their decision to attend these expensive schools. They know what they're getting themselves into. There are definitely more helpful solutions that the government could turn to, but the fact is, they haven't. For many students, OSAP is a double-edged sword: It helps you afford the education, but it turns on you as soon as you've received it.
i have never heard of this red campaign but i reacted in a similar way when BMW painted a pink ribbon on a car and raised money for breast cancer. i wasn't able to put it that clearly in class but i fully agree that saving the world by not changing our habits or without really thinking is not helping. it does skip the point.
i am editor for my high school paper this month. you obviously know 1237902387 things about writing and I just wanted to know the top 5 most important issues you feel necessary to write about. i'd like to make the paper less fluffy!

the top 5 most important issues that i personally feel necessary to write about are very different from the 5 most important issues i feel are important for my readers to hear about.
i basically just always strive to write critically about any topic i write about. arthur, our university paper, really tried to tie in issues that affect the student body and the downtown community. you can check out our website, www.trentarthur.info.
i feel like our biggest strength is encouraging dialogue and getting response... we have an anti-oppression policy, and like to encourage dialogue about racism, sexism, homophobia, fatphobia, etc. basically encouraging a dialogue about these serious issues. if there are negative posters going around your school, talk about why they could be seen as offensive and if they are appropriate, etc. if there are interesting talks going on about interesting issues, write about them, interview people, get lots of quotes, etc.

thanks. this has been extremely helpful, especially the weblife and world section on your webpage. our paper is pretty censored. sadly, the only negative issue going on in school that we could discuss is fatphobia but it is a good start. i like the idea of sparking more discussion. selina.
