I too think the boys needed separation. Too much bad blood from the end of last season, and Dean's words to Sam at the end of the last episode would make it almost impossible for them not to. But they need it. Sam to find himself again, and Dean to step up to the "warrior" he is to become. It was a selfless act for both of them to put the world before their pride and feelings
( ... )
That last scene broke my heart, but I loved it from a story-telling and character perspective. It was a genuine result of what they've been through with each other. I think it would have felt like a cheat to me if they hadn't separated.
I LOVED that they gave us an explanation for Dean's amulet!
I was really struck last night by how much Dean has matured. Season 1 Dean he is not.
I did like that scene where he starts going after Sam but realizes he has a responsibility to help the people in the church. He's realizing that there's a bigger picture here.
I liked the scene with Ellen throwing holy water in his face. LOL...he looks good wet. ;-)

You're right - Dean has matured a lot since S1. Sometimes I miss S1 Dean, but other times (like in this episode) I like the Dean that he has become.
