Had a meeting with the boss today to go over my annual review. Basically, I'm already at the ceiling and he'd like to see me grow. "What are your plans for the future?" he said. "Well, I plan on applying to optometry school in the fall." I replied. He chuckled and said, "Well, optometrists die old, fat, and happy..., but there is a lot of routine ( Read more... )

i agree wholeheartedly with every word in your entry. i found myself in the same position (there are two degrees in public health- PhD or the professional degree, DrPH).

Since I agree with EVERYTHING you just stated, I'm hoping to get a better feel for what is best for me after working for a few years.....but I have a feeling, that in the end, a professional life is far too appealing compared to the neverending struggle of academia. *shrugs* i hope you can figure it out!...and if you do, let me know what you decide!

If you want to take an academic research driven track but don't necessarily want to become a professor, it may be worth getting a PHD and then looking for a research job in the bio-pharmaceutical industry. That is a common type of career track for engineering students who don't want to be professors, though I don't know what sort of optometry/audiology research is being done by medical companies.

hey, obviously pretty different fields but as my self-indulgent currently-pursued ultra-academic degree will be getting me nowhere, i am planning to get a professional degree asap. i also recently met a psychotherapist who has been practicing for like 10 years with a masters, and is now, established in practice, going to be part-time working towards a phd because she wants it but know it's not quite so practical. i think that is actually a kind of good plan, and once you had job security and the flexibility of being trusted in yr field, you could start work towards being well known on the conference circuit or research or whatever...?

ALSO there is a recession dinner at liza and jordan's house tonight (tuesday)at 8. theme-- tv dinner/fast food. i think i am making tofu sloppy joes and liza is making gluten free mac and cheese. text me if you need anymore info, i'm not sure if you and liza talk frequently!!!
