Personality:
There's a universal law that when a group of friends consist of the hopelessly derpy, the ironically cool, and the plain silly, that there must be a straight man to complement them. Rose, thanks to cosmic inevitability, is that person. She fulfills this role admirably; people quickly learn that if they want a more serious, more thoughtful conversation, they should go to Rose. Her reserved, more analytical manner means that she's a giver of fairly helpful advice (whether you want it or not) but she'll also poke holes in the more out-there ideas or plans. Rose is not a fellow conspirator in mischief, though she is not morally opposed to it. It is simply that Rose reserves her own moments of silliness to times when she's alone.
Because she's a very private (not to say secretive) person. She can keep people at bay with her sarcasm and with her apparent scorn for sentimental gestures. Of course that isn't true, but don't wait for her to admit it; it's a rare moment when she'll let down her guard, but it does happen. In canon when John reminds her that she hasn't wished him a happy birthday, she reluctantly replies that she wasn't able to finish his present on time, and didn't feel that just words would be enough. This is because, even for Rose, there comes a time when words have to be put aside for action.
This is, as ever, as risky as it is helpful. Rose is hardly timid, and willing to experiment if she thinks it'll move her forward, especially if it will help out her friends as well. Even if this involves burning bridges behind her. This is a real problem, as it leads Kanaya (again in canon) to call Rose the "dangerous" player in the kids' session. Still, the person that Rose is most likely to endanger is herself - she knows that her plans can be risky, and she won't fob it off on other people, instead even actively preventing them from doing so if she has to.
For all of this, Rose isn't the hardest person to get to know. She's definitely willing to talk, and her interest in psychoanalysis betrays her general interest in people, despite her assumption that most people say the opposite of what they really mean. Her war with her mother did not help her in this regard. Thus, it's less of a question of getting Rose to talk to you as it is putting up with Rose and her way of "lay[ing] it on thick", as Dave calls it.

AU Background:
Rose was actually born the younger of two twins, but after about a year their parents split up, her father taking her brother Dave while Rose stayed with her mother. Rose could hardly blame her father (or brother) for not keeping in contact - considering how her mother handled just one child, she couldn't imagine what life would have been like with all four of them around. As implied, her relationship with her mother was...not the easiest, but they made it work, as passive-aggressive as it could be.
They ended up in Fletz, and Rose found the gated community atmosphere to be stifling. In rebellion, she started indulging in some of her more obscure or strange interests, like the mythology involved with eldritch horrors. She spent a lot of time cooped up in her room, reading, knitting, writing (secretly!), or, at times, playing computer games. It was through these games that she met most of her friends, including her brother. Though she could come into conflict with them, and they weren't always the closest group, at least it was better than the people in Fletz. And Rose gave them a chance: she went to school and got great grades, if only to spite them.
It was around this time that her powers started manifesting, which really just became one more thing in her war with her mother, who converted one room of their house into a darkroom and filled another with lights of all shapes and sizes. Rose briefly considered taking up photography so she could "make full use of the room", but quickly discovered that the horrorterrors were not quite as asleep as she'd been led to believe. Though nothing big happened, her brief brush with the dark powers was enough to convince her that it was a very slippery slope. Though she wasn't scared, she figured she should confront them with as much preparation as she could possibly have. Fortunately it wasn't too long afterward that she received an invitation to Estrasia, and learning that her friends had gotten similar letters took any doubt out of her decision.
She did, however, consider the fact that it was a boarding school and that would mean leaving her mother alone. And like any good, caring daughter, she decided to modify a doll, knitting it miniature versions of her own clothes so that her mother could have a least a version of Rose around to keep her company.
Her mother later sent her pictures of the doll firmly ensconced in a gold throne. Rose has yet to figure out the best way to respond when she next goes home.
Appearance: Okay, first the canonical stuff: Rose has short blonde hair that's held back by a headband. She tends to wear purple and black clothing as well as skirts and dresses over pants. She's particularly fond of a shirt with an icon of a cartoon Squiddles character that's she's modified to look more like a horrorterror. (Imagine a Cthulhu sort of tentacle beast and there you go. Also see icon of this post.)
Technically, this is headcanon, but this is an AU game so I guess it doesn't matter. But just FYI. Rose is tall for her age and pretty wiry; she's a bit stronger than she looks, but that's decently easy to accomplish with the lean build she's got.

Injuring/Maiming: Sure.
Killing: I'm open, but let's talk about it first please!
Hugging, Kissing, etc.: ...If you wanted to? She'll probably be skeptical.
Deaging, Genderswapping, etc.: All the chaos. All of it.
Mindreading: No shields, so there's nothing there to block you. But talk to me first? Rose would hate it, so I'd just like to be able to plot it out a bit first.
