Where should one go to get, say, a nice white outdoor paint suitable for fences?

Consumer reports is a fan of Kilz casual colors, and Valspar Ultra Premium Duramax Satin outdoor paint. Behr's Premium Plus has only undergone 2/3 of the testing but is holding up well so far.

I believe Kilz is available through walmart
Valspar is avaiable through Lowes.
Behr is through Home Depot.

Home Depot or Lowes, that type of place. They should have exterior, interior, stains, and maybe a few other options for you.

I haven't done exterior painting, but I know Dutch Boy and Valspar are two of the best interior paints. They pricier, but are thick so it takes only 1 coat.

PS:Does this mean I might get to paint?

*coughcough* No offense, but I've been painting on and off for a living and Dutch Boy is one of the worst paints I have ever had to work with. Generally took at least three coats to do the job properly. Maybe they have changed their quality since I last used them about four (five?) years ago though, I don't know.

If you're looking for really good quality paint, you'll want to get something like Benjamin Moore or Pratt & Lambert. Anything you get from a hardware store, like Home Despot or Lowes (looking at Behr and Valspar here) are going to be pretty much crap paint with poor binders. The Ralph Lauren paint, which you can find at Home Despot, is the exception to that rule.

Kilz, however, is specifically designed for adhering to rough surfaces and for blocking stains. You can also find it just about anywhere. Usually it's used as just a primer, but they probably have a finishing paint as well. The primer may very well be sufficient for your needs.

Yes, I have used Dutchboy in the last few years, painting a lighter coat over a darker coat, and it only took 1 coat of paint. They may have changed it in recent years, I'm not sure.

I've used Kelly-Moore and Behr paints in the past with a great deal of success.

(I agree with you that all hardware-store paints are not equal. I'd rather leave the walls bare than deal with the paint from ACE again...)

I tend to prefer Behr due to the ease of replacement (a home depot is usually easy to find), having had success with it in the past, and the positive reviews it gets from Consumer Reports.

I like Kilz primer, which is readily findable and good quality. I've yet to use the paints that are associated with the brand. (If they are only available at walmart, I will likely remain ignorant of their quality)
