I want to update here more often, but I'm afraid anything I write here will sound either boring or narcissistic. What are you supposed to write in these things?
Thoughts, observations, theories, little stories about what's happened to you, photos of band practise, movie/show/book/game reviews, ponderances, snippets of things you find interesting ... The very act of keeping a public journal might be called by some 'narcissistic' but those are the sort of people who are afraid to be part of the world themselves so I don't think their opinion matters. If we're following you on LJ we clearly care what you think. Think of it as a newspaper column you have permission to write - you can put anything in it you like, the selling point is that it's coming from you.
One of the few people who still has a really active following on LJ is copperbadge, who started off writing HP fanfic but more and more people followed him just because his blog was so engaging. Give it a read and you'll see what I mean. Obviously it takes time to work up to that level of blog-writing, but it's always useful to have an example

Let us know how you are doing and what is new in your life! You're such a creative and interesting person, and I (and perhaps others) don't get to see you in person often enough, so this is a way to stay connected. Miss you and hope all is well!
