Good news and Bad News

So, Hypatia went to be tested for allergies today, and the good news is that she is not allergic to cats, so Yuki has a home. They are also probably going to get another cat as well, so he will have a friend. The bad news is that she is allergic to a ridiculous amount of foods. All dairy, soy, peanuts and some tree nuts, eggs and all fish. The ( Read more... )

i'm not sure if it has soy in it (that makes it so much more difficult), but if it doesn't Whole Foods' dairy-free chocolate cake is the best chocolate cake i've ever tasted.
my little brother is allergic to dairy, eggs, nuts, and most shellfish, so my stepmom went through something similar when she was breastfeeding.
wow, though... poor hypatia has even worse luck!

Hooray for Yuki (but no kitty for me) but boohoo for 'Patia. Are they sure? I've always been leary of the whole "you're allergic to the following fifteen food groups" medical thing. But that's based on my run-ins with certain Naturopathic Mumbojumbists. Sad though, if true! She'll never know the joy of cheese?

She's likely to grow out of milk, soy and eggs. Fish and peanuts tend to stay for life.

young children often have numerous allergies, but they also often grow out of them. i was allergic to milk as a child, but now i drink the stuff by the gallon and it generally raises my mood.

i drank goat milk as a child instead of cow milk. breast feeding wasn't an option since i was adopted.

a friend of mine in high school had been allergic to milk until our senior year. i remember him having his first milkshake one winter morning in our senior lounge. it was quite a momentous occasion.

so, hopefully Hypatia will grow out of these things. until then, suggest goat milk to your sister, and i'll ask my mom if she has any other suggestions.

Yeah, my sister was told she's likely to grow out of some of them, but she still has to restrict her diet now. Hypatia, however, is allergic to all dairy, not just milk. Does "dairy" just refer to cows?

Dairy doesn't just refer to cow milk products, but it's hard to say what she was tested for and how generally they dispense the information. It seems it would be worth the inquiry to see if other types of milk would cause the same reaction.
