All right, the last entry proves two things: I have some pretty awesome and intelligent friends, and the thought we had at work today* was correct. If you didn't check out the previous post already, I asked which female artist would be the first off the tip of your tongue if I asked you to name one. It's too hot for me to wonder if the grammar on ( Read more... )

There was a HUGE show on Kahlo at Tate Modern when I was in London. It was absolutely packed and had one of the busiest "buy some stuff now that you're done sections" I've ever seen in a museum.

So of course I purchased some postcards and an expensive book. So worth it though.

Also, did you ever read "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?">by (Vassar grad) Linda Nochlin?

Yes! At some point during 105-106, I believe. Thank you for linking me to it; I can't believe I never thought about it during my wee experiment today. Luvz you.

My dad's first thought was O'Keefe, when I asked him what most people would think of first.

They do seem to be the logical choices, and even though my coworker thought more people would think of Kahlo, I still stand by O'Keeffe as the most likely choice. I guess it helps that both of them had extremely distinctive styles, as well as generally veering away from traditional domestic imagery.

hm. i definitely am familiar with frida kahlo, i wonder why i didn't think of her first. i suspect it's that i don't think of her as very feminine.

georgia o'keefe was legitimately the first one i thought of. the second one though was anne geddes. feel free to hurl.

Actually, I will say I don't think Warhol is much of a household name these days. I always make cracks about Warhol something-or-anohter and nobody gets it! Maybe my jokes are out of context, but seriously? Come on.

At the barn we just repainted jumps and there's this one jump we call the "splatter jump," whic his just a white jump with splattered paint everywhere because we got bored of ACTUALLY painting so we just flung paint at it. And they call it the Splatter Jump but I am like "YOU GUYS. It's the ANDY WARHOL JUMP" and nobody gets THAT either, how sad.

I am sorry about your lack of AC problem. :O That's AWFUL. We, unfortunately, aer back in the 40s with overcast weather & RAIN and RIGHT NOW I just got out of a hot shower and am in a sweatshirt and long pjs and socks which is my DECEMBER sweats, BUT, the poitn is, we had a heat wave about three weeks ago and I completely sympathise. Hang in there!

And, so. Yes. I think that's it for this comment!

I realized you might have meant painters instead, and Frida and Georgia popped into my head near simultaneously.

They were very closely followed by Grandma Moses.

I thought about writing painters, but then figured that was unnecessarily narrow, as the question had ultimately been prompted by stuff we sell, and we do a lot of photography (including two images by Sally Mann). I put "visual artists" so it might encompass painting, photography, sculpture, installations, etc,but not stuff like music, dance, writing and so forth.

i guess there was a movie about Frida Kahlo, which might explain the large scale appeal.

granted, there was also a movie about artemisia gentileschi a while ago, but no one cares. :)
