Oh my god, someone I know actually loves McKinley as much as I do! Beauty used to be my favorite, then I read Rose Daughter.

I liked Rose Daughter a lot, but Beauty just baaarely edges out over it because of nostalgia points. :)

Yeah, it scores high with me, too. Beauty was the first book I ever read out of the 'adult' section of our library here. I think I was 9, maybe 10.

McKinley is love. I like Sunshine and The Hero and the Crown best, but I find her stories based on fairy tales to be excellent as well (I'm also quite fond of Beauty).

The one fairy tale re-telling of hers that I didn't care for was Spindle's End. It had some really good parts in it, but omfg the pacing was such crap. It was soooo slow, and then the end part felt like she'd cribbed it from Aerin's final battle against her uncle, with the tower, and the big cats and wild dogs.

Sunshine is my all-time favorite book of hers, and I love the two Damar books as well.

Now I need to find Deerskin and Sunshine and read them both again. They are somewhere in a box. I just have to figure out which one.

I liked Spindle's End -- but I think it's telling I only ever managed to read it once, and later gave away my copy without blinking. I have a feeling my fond memories of the cool stuff are better than I'd find the actual book. *g*

I need to get my own copy of Sunshine. I borrowed it from the library last summer for my first read through and have been aching to give it a re-read since.

Sunshine makes me hungry. Spindle's End is confusing at the end, but I actually like the leisurely pace at the earlier parts.
