been on my mind lately

Fun facts: A female character who is weak willed is not a "Mary Sue". A female character who is kind hearted and sweet is not a "Mary Sue". A female character who is well liked is not a "Mary Sue". Neither is one who is good looking, well endowed, ridden with past tragedies, contradictory, too successful, too unsuccessful, or any of these things ( Read more... )

I make a very special place in my heart for Beowulf. He's basically the ideal of manliness. Not even Odysseus can top that, or Achilles. Beowulf will break them. I wish that movie had been better.

UGH I haven't been in fandom in ages, but ffffffff fandom is just. bad in all ways. idk the ship wars and biases and freaking out of everyone is just too damn exhausting

I liked Odysseus, but I thought it was balls that he was cool with letting his entire crew die. I also think the main reason I liked him was that I compared him to the suitors, who sounded like the biggest creepers on the planet. But I guess it's like, Greeks, what do you expect, right? It's that Mediterranean air~

Beowulf was just like yeah, whatever. I've got wives, so what? I cut up this Grendel with two fingers. You think you're better than me? Maybe you didn't see me when I punched that sea monster in the balls during that swimming race. That's why I didn't win.

I agree with you. I can find a relatively passive kind woman who is a secretary just as interesting as some badass magical amazon girl who is just out to have adventures.

Idk..... I could go on a rant about this but I wont.

HAHHAA I like to say things, and I am glad that you agree with the things that I say! This is one of the biggest things bugging me of late, so yeah.

Argh, people who only like characters they personally can deal with!

This bothers me so much. It is the Anti-Nia fan's biggest complaints about her. That she is sweet and well-liked but not ass kicking left and right, but id wouldn't make SENSE for her to be ass kicking everywhere. And it makes me scared to make female characters who are less like Lorena, but then If ear getting redundant and AUGHHH.

But yes you always say things so well. ;--; Please continue expressing all of my opinions for me forever.

YEAH I just end up thinking "fuck 'em" because I care about people liking my story, but I don't think I'd feel good about them liking my story if (to me) it was an utter bullshit story. So I'm putting in the characters that are interesting, and realistic, and then People Who Matter will enjoy it. People Who Matter also happen to be the ones most willing to drop cash on a hard copy of an American comic.

I dunno. I could easily make a yaoi comic about an english band and all the girls are fairly nonexistent and I'd gain like 2000000 popularity points, but I wouldn't get enjoyment out of it.

So the moral of the story is??? Make the female characters that you think are awesome! I most likely will also think that they are awesome 8)

I could not agree more!

Female characters are multi-faceting just like any male character. Just like any person. People have moments of strength and moments of weakness and so on.

Exactly! In fact, when I think about real people, they hardly seem to be willing to go outside of society norms and take risks and adventure and so many other things. They do in fact tend to be weak willed! So they seem to be even MORE realistic to me than super strong amazon women? Even men, haha.

I think a lot of people manage to trivialize characters who shouldn't be trivialized, because they simply don't think about them very far beyond 'I don't look up to this person'.

Yeah, ugh. Characters don't need to be looked-up-to to be interesting. I mean, so many male characters are sullen jerks that are adored by fans; female characters can't as easily fit that mold and be loved.
