Baby Name Rant

Jul 12, 2009 20:11

I should start out by saying that, first and foremost, I don't have anyone in particular in mind in this little rant. I spend a lot of time on a mommy website and have, in turn, read a lot of threads on the baby name advice/suggestions.

I am a polite person, so I'm taking my time here to rant about it instead of going ballistic on people over there.

Funny thing... My youngest is named after a video game character from Adrian's fav video game, FFVII. But instead of going for the main character, Cloud, he chose a supporting character, Vincent. As it was a more 'normal' name.

Oh... And GRATZ on the wee one coming your way.

(and this is Kari. :P )

Right, see and if he would have went with Cloud, well, people still might not have made the association because they probably just would have thought you guys like Earthy names.

Sephiroth, Aerith, or Yuffie would fall into the category of "Oh, your parents must like FFVII to name you that category"

Don't forget Tifa. :P But then with the exception of Sephiroth, those are all girl names. And I had a boy. :P

I lol'd at Bylbou! XD OH my GAWD, if I were a kid with that name I'd just kill myself.

I always think it's weird when celebrities name their kids. Like Apple. Are you fucking SERIOUS? Your child is not a FRUIT.

What's next, Pomegranate?

I was considering flower/plant names for a girl, but more conventional ones. Suddenly it seems like every flower is up for grabs. Like "Calla" a type of Lily. It just sounds stupid to me.

What really gets me are the variant spellings of "Caitlin" and "Ashley"...C'mon: "Katelyn"? The original Irish pronunciation is more like "Kathleen".

Second on the "Bylbou" LOL!!!

Oh, and kids spelling "ludicrous" Ludacris.

I really liked your commentary, btw.

I know, Welsh/Irish/Gaelic names are a fad right now. So is spelling them incorrectly. There was someone who wanted to name their son "Rowen", and again, I hit my head against things. First off, Rowan is a word, it's a type of friggin tree, second, I don't think welsh/gaelic spelling conventions work the same way as our English vowels...

You said it. It's so frustrating some of the idiotic names I've seen.

I've been wanting to post something like this myself, but some friends have recently fell afoul of a few conventions I'd rant about and I'd rather not hurt their feelings.

Working at my local Community College's Assessment Center I was exposed to some really crazy names, too. I feel sorry for those people condemned by their parents to answer the same incredulous questions over and over again their entire lives. It just seems so irresponsible.
