Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Thin and lanky, almost jarringly so depending on who’s drawing him. But it’s a confident type of thinness that veils grace and muscle.
2. How old is he?
Younger than Ginko. He’s 20 in Luceti, 19 in canon.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
His posture is relaxed while standing, sometimes with a slight slouch. Same with sitting. It can become rigid if placed in the right situation, and then he’ll stand tall like a pole.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
His form of martial arts demands he be fit at all times. Plus it comes with the whole “wanted pirate” territory. He’s the picture of health for his age if you ignore the smoking bit - which his canon is fond of doing (the guy swims like a fish despite having smoked like a chimney since age 10). Also, he’s damn flexible. I have no doubts Sanji is a master of yoga.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Fluid. Maybe even a practiced grace, as he fancies himself a suave gentleman.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Oh, I think he’s quite attractive. Fandom sees him as the crew’s pretty boy, even with his facial stubble and hairy legs. He’s tall, blond, and when not pulling off that practical suaveness he’s so good at, has quite a boyish smile. The boy-smile aside, Sanji knows he’s considered eye-candy by some -- still doesn’t get him laid at the end of the day. Ah, the trials of a
Butt Monkey. 7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Very fair, which might be due to the time he spent in the kitchen growing up. No blemishes to speak of.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Blond and thin, yet somehow defying all laws of gravity when it comes to the left eye. It is always swept over it, no matter how wildly he fights or if he's blatantly hung upside-down.
9. What color are his eyes?
My headcanon says a sky blue when he’s happy, but grows dark like the sea when you’ve pissed him off.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
lol those eyebrows. They swirl at the end. Curly Brow is his nickname with good reason, but heaven help you if you bring it up and you’re not a woman. And while it’s not really a feature, it’s a rare occurrence to see Sanji without a cigarette lit between his lips.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
… meh? Well, I’d say his shoulders, if I’m interpreting the question correctly. He’s conditioned his legs to withstand everything, and probably makes a point of stretching them religiously. I can see Sanji forgoing attention to his upper-body without realizing it.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Suiiiiiits. The boy knows how to dress sharp since to him, it’ll impress the ladies. Besides that, he has no issues varying his outfits - sometimes it’ll be a colorful piece he ganked from Hawaii, and then again to an orange-stripped collar shirt. Though canon has decreed sometimes he loses his
damn mind.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
His outfits don’t seem to add any extra weight to him, that’s for sure. Considering his attitude, the clothes fit his personality: collected and classy. And he wears them well.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
His job(s) isn’t one he can drop or switch out of whenever he feels like it… though the idea of Sanji changing outfits before a battle is hilarious to me. But no, what he wears is what he wears. He has no qualms with getting his suits dirty; he might just bitch at the enemy for it while kicking their ass.
I should note that when cooking, he takes off his jacket and will roll the sleeves of his shirt up. That’s about the extent of it.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Whatever you want him to be in, ladies.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Low and smooth, baby (Japanese VA only). Classy with a bit of attitude. If not for his cruel canon and his... extravagant way of expressing affection, he’d make you want to take off your pants and throw them at his head. But that's just my humble opinion.
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
It really depends on the gender, the familiarity, and Sanji’s current frustration level. It’s almost always even, loud enough to be heard, the sort of voice that comes across as serious without being daunting. Good for conversation. The angrier he gets, the more his speech flies and his tone cuts.
However. If God has blessed you with breasts, Sanji’s voice will dip and dive as he proclaims his eternal love. Especially if you’re an orange-haired thief or a black-haired archeologist.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
Ah, we’re going to pretend 4Kids doesn’t exist for this question. Besides that little hiccup, I don’t know enough about the Japanese language to pick up a dialect.
He does have this amusing habit of adding -chan or -san to female names, regardless of how familiar he is with them. Really get him going and they will change to -chwan and -swan, respectively.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
Whatever language is spoken in his canon.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
He’s rougher with his speech when it comes to men, and will cuss like a damn sailor on most occasions. Ladies get the refined, sappy treatment, complete with eye-hearts that explode upon contact.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
A little of both. Sanji will weigh words carefully in his head, depending, but it’s not a requirement. He’s just as easily able to pull something out of his ass without a problem and still get his point across.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
I wouldn’t say he’s ever… inarticulate. Unless very flustered, which is more than possible. Otherwise very eloquent, with a piercing, blunt type of speech in regular situations… unless you’re a girl. But that’s a disclaimer that needs to be put with half these questions.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Sanji’s the heavy-weight strategist of the Straw Hats, so plenty of both. No formal schooling, but he thinks ahead, considers situations from different angles. And it’s my own head canon that he has a love of books - mostly fairytales.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
Once again, plenty of both. He’s rarely allowed time to formulate a plan when in the midst of battle, but still manages to come up with some creative plans that lands him a win. On the flipside, give him that time to think and he’ll pretty much guarantee the Straw Hats make a quick escape.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
He tends to straddle that fence, but often times will side with logical. At least at first. He’s very good at picking out the small details as well as the big picture. But Sanji’s more than willing to sacrifice logic and practicality in the name of idealism - just look at his dream. He’s not insensitive, either, and can tell when logic is best kept out of sight for a crew member that needs a more comforted approach.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
No formal schooling in terms of general subjects. But oh, his cooking knowledge. For such a young chef, he’s a damn prodigy.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
He’s certified to blow your taste buds off, he’s that damn good. And Sanji’s a sucker for knowledge in general, I think. Not one to turn down a good conversation. Like I said before, he has a healthy love and respect for fairytales, definitely.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
There’s no clear answer for this, either. He’s talkative and will keep a conversation going for as long as he needs to. Likes getting to know others. Very sensitive all-around. Getting him to talk about himself is the tough part, though. What’s his business is his business, and unless he views someone as a close friend, he will make that distinction very clear.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Sanji is the king of emotional whiplash because he’s so damn gender-motivated. If you’re a woman? Expect sweet nothings, promises of forever, delicious foods ready at your beck and call. If you’re a man? You’ll get trash-talking and Sanji’s foot in your face. And that’s if he likes you. Pissing him off results in his bursting into actual flames and hunting you to the ends of the earth.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Unless prompted to act so, Sanji is wary without being suspicious. He’ll keep an eye on folks, but he’s not going to denounce them if they give him no reason. Unless (oh, I bet you can’t see this coming)-unless they’re women.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
Depends. For all his anger issues, Sanji’s not one to start a fight unless someone gives him reason to start kicking. That hardly means he’ll wait for someone to ping his bad side before acting, if the situation calls for it.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Fight, fight, FIGHT. Even as a child his ‘flight’ simulators were disabled. This kid tried to take on a group of pirates with a kitchen knife. Who DOES that?
As an adult, it’s a mixture of pride and protectiveness that will keep him going in a battle. He’s not like Luffy and Zoro, who can walk away from something irrelevant. Piss Sanji off and his focus narrows to ass-stomping.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
His humor is for the most part, refined, but dry. So dry. Also troll-like if you ping him that way. That doesn’t mean he won’t break out a chuckle when Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper start dancing on the table, though. In some cases, he is more than willing to go up there and join them.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
Perhaps PTSD, but I’m sure he worked through most of those issues by age 19. So… none, really. Oh, unless his anger issues count. And that he deals with by taking his frustrations out on some poor fool. Usually Zoro.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
Starving will forever be a staple in Sanji’s life. He’ll never let a man go hungry if he can help it, as he doesn’t want anyone else to experience what he did.
14. What does he fear?
Starving again. His crew starving. He’s worked through most of those issues, but the entire topic is a trauma button.
Being unable to protect those he loves.
Spiders, loathe as he is to admit it. But due to white-haired trolls, he’s working on that.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
All-Bluuuuuuuuuuuue. The legendary sea that is a sea-faring chef’s paradise. That’s the whole reason he joined up with Luffy in the first place.
Another part of Sanji would love to start a family one day.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
Sanji keeps his past under wrap, but I don’t see that as something he’s actively trying to hide. It’s more a matter of principle. His past is no one’s business. No one needs to know about it. That’s the general rule with Sanji, too. If he doesn’t think it’s your business, you’ll have a damn hard time getting info out of him.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Hahaha. Why don’t you tell me?
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Good question. Very good question.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
I wonder. Really, Oda-sensei, you might wanna get on some of these.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
His crew, hands down. I personally don’t think he sees them in that traditional family sense, though. It’s easier to equate their roles to “little brother” or “annoying older sibling”, but it’s something different entirely. They’re… nakama.
And Zeff definitely deserves mention. Once again, I don’t think Sanji sees him as a father, persay. He’s… Zeff, the man who saved his life, taught him how to cook, and gave him a second chance. He doesn’t need a label. He is who he is.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Doesn't really have one. The closest canonly is Usopp, I’d wager. And their first meeting was when Usopp dared to refuse Sanji’s food. It’s a miracle the Longnose is alive.
6. Does he have other close friends?
It’s plausible to stick in the Baratie employees. At the very least, he left them on good terms.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
You’d think he’d have a hard time with the guys, but no. Sanji is very good at making friends with anyone. The chances of him butting heads with bullheaded individuals increases, but that doesn’t mean he dislikes them. Just don’t disrespect him, food, women, or the people he gives a shit about.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Fff fuck that noise, they’re all important.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Single. He’d like to be married some day!
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
He’d need a spouse first.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
His first crush? God knows. Some unlucky lady who visited the Baratie. Latest crush would be Nami, but that… well, it’s complicated. Moreso in Luceti than in canon, I think.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
He wants someone emotionally capable and strong, the type of person who can put Sanji in his place whenever he’s in a pissy mood. But sensitive as well. He’s like an excitable puppy, really. At the end of the day he just wants to feel loved and appreciated.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
No children, but it’s my head canon that he adores them. Little girls the most, of course, even if they can turn him into their bitch within two seconds. That should answer the last part of the question, too.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
Oh ho ho, does he? If he’s pissed you off, pick a number and get in line.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the
Kinsey scale?
…. Huh? >__> I don’t really understand that scale, but while I do think Sanji is mostly straight, I can’t deny he’d be just fine in a same-sex relationship. The second would just take more getting used to because the boy has a preference for breasts.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
Gonna throw more head canon at ya’ll. He’s a hot-blooded 19-year-old, so that says plenty. Once he’s had sex (at least regularly), I figure Sanji would calm down with his sex-deprived antics. It’s part of a healthy relationship, but he’s not a sex-maniac.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Uh... he’s a cuddle-butt. No, he really is. Give him snuggles, please. I make a point not to think too hard about this type of question, otherwise.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
I can’t see him being any of those. Chances are it’s never crossed his mind.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
Will not hit women. Will not hit women. WILL NOT HIT WOMEN. - Zeff beat it into him.
Will not waste food. Will not waste food. WILL NOT WASTE FOOD. - Starving does that to you.
I can’t think of any situation that would compromise these two truths. He’s even attempted to break the first. His nakama were counting on him, yet in the end he still couldn’t do it. And just because Sanji won’t let you starve doesn’t mean he won’t kick your ass later.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Not his business, so why does he care. Just as long as you’re not hurting his nakama or women with it.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
Can’t think of any.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Being a pirate means he’s probably visited all of those financial situations besides the deb-oh wait, Nami-san. Nope, nevermind. He’s experienced them all.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
Pirates generally don’t give a rat’s ass about social status.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
I’M ON A BOAT, MOTHER FUCKER, DON’T YOU EVER FORGET.
And Sunny is never in anything besides perfect shape, tyvm. Or Franky would kill them.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Uh. Cooking utensils. Cooking books… yeah, we can see where this is going.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
/smacks you with canon. I’ve already covered this. If no one knows this shit by now, GOOGLE IT.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
Women and food. He’s not shown to have much interest outside of that. Though when he’s not busy, will do whatever a crewmate is in the mood for. If Usopp wants to play cards, that’s fine. Robin wants to discuss a book? He’s down with that. So on and so forth.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
He’s a very healthy eater, due to his profession. He doubles as the ship’s nutritionist. Eating out he tends to frown upon personally - not for the others, just himself. He’s a chef, and will end up judging whatever food he’s given out of habit. Suffice to say most food won’t reach his personal standards. Alcohol he’s okay with, but he’s a bit of a lightweight. As for certain foods… life has taught Sanji not to discriminate.
Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite: (Okay, Oda has filled in some of these already. Thus, in the name of creativity, I’m putting down what I associate him with)
1. Color? Sea blue.
2. Smell? The faint scent of sea-salt. Smoke. An aroma of cuisine that’s impossible to define but always makes you hungry.
3. Time of day? Evening, when the sun kisses the horizon.
4. Season? Summer. Beginnings of Fall.
5. Book? Any fairytale you like but in particular, Sleeping Beauty.
