I have been reading some really great books lately. It's rare that I get such a string of good ones in a row, so I'm loving it and dreading when the streak will end ( Read more... )

Yes, the characters are definitely the strength of Game of Thrones. If the violence level/character death bothers you now, you are quite correct that you shouldn't read the rest of the series. I love it, but I can definitely understand how it's not for everyone. (As to the prevalence of rape in the series, I'm not fond of it, but I don't see it as being there for "entertainment"--it's simply part of the inherent violence of the world, and it's interesting to see how the female characters, most of them very strong, deal with the underlying threat of a world in which men have so much more political, sexual, and physical power.)

Let me know what you think of The Help. I'm curious to read it because I heard my grandmother talk about it also.

Yes, I do appreciate the strength of the named female characters (Danaerys was my fave). Just can't handle a book that makes me sick to my stomach when I read it! Another friend did warn me before I started, and I thought I could see past the violence but it turns out I can't.

Reading the Help is a bit like what I've heard about watching Mad Men -- it's a fascinating look back into the early 1960s and the civil rights movement, but it also has a lot of great interesting human moments about relationships and family. Highly recommended.

I'm so happy to hear a good review of _Bossypants_ from someone I know. I've been eying it as my "Engrossing Transatlantic Flight Read" for the trip to England in August. I love love love Tina Fey (though I guess who doesn't?) so was kind of wondering whether I was more interested in reading the book because I like her than because I actually want to read the book. So, you've sold me ( ... )

Yes! Thank you for articulating better than I could. It's one thing to have sexual violence be a reality of a certain fictional culture and another to have it described with quite so much relish. I have not watched the show, and probably won't now that I've decided against the series as a whole for me but glad to know it's been turned into the Game of Thrones Soft-Core festival!
