Yes. They're also known as Callery pear (the botanical name is Pyrus calleryana) but the sickly-sweet smell is too much for me. A lady I know through PTA described it as smelling like slightly rotten meat a few years ago and it's stuck in my head since then.
yay! congrats on your orchid! A lady I work with raises orchids. She has a greenhouse in her back yard with dozens of them. I myself am a gardener of questionable skill so I wouldn't dare trying to get an orchid to grow. Give me something super easy like swiss chard.
I am stunned it bloomed again. It's the second one we've had since 2004; the first one died of neglect. (We also have a cyclamen that I am pretty sure blooms to spite me because I hate it but I keep watering it out of habit.)
I am much better at caring for plants that can be eaten -- we have a bunch of herbs inside and the Meyer lemon is waiting for the last frost to be past before it goes out on the patio.
