[ Canon Point ] : Post chapter 20.

[ History ] :  Gankyuu Eguriko has been alive for 1000 years. This is because she has the secret to immortality-an apple! Not a metaphorical apple or anything, an actual apple inside her. Actually, she has two, but it wasn’t always that way.

The story is commonly known-Adam and Eve, and the forbidden fruit. The fruit is rumored to have been filled with all sorts of good things, like complete strength, immortality, knowledge, ect. God gave Adam and Eve all the paradise they could want-plenty of healthy food, beautiful scenery, and a lovely place to live-and he gave them all of this with only one repercussion, that they could not eat from the forbidden fruit.

Which of course, they did.

So that’s the story of the apple inside of Gankyuu-and rather, the basic plot for the whole series. People, when faced with a life or death situation see a hallucination of an apple tree before them. They can chose to eat the fruit and live forever, or decline the fruit and die right then.

Now, on to Gankyuu’s story.

Gankyuu was abandoned at birth, and picked up by a working-class family. Her new family worked on a farm, and quickly, they put her to work. She was, unfortunately, very prone to illness, and often times, her work suffered because of it. Her family hated her. They yelled at her for not being able to do the work and her older brothers blamed her when they messed up, so she’d get in trouble.

Still though, Gankyuu worked hard. She loved her family because they didn’t leave her. They accepted her as far as she was concerned.

One day, she overheard her mother and father talking. They said that she was getting very sick recently, and they should probably abandon her soon, since she was getting to be a nuisance. She stopped being beneficial to them. Still, Gankyuu did her best. She overworked her poor, frail body, until her family declared that she was too sick to be around them anymore. So, her mother threw into a room and locked her there, waiting for her to die.

However, while Gankyuu was locked in there, her family was killed by a group of people called the “mushi”. Mushi is an organization that hunts down the apples, in the effort to become god-like creatures. Now, they don’t state how Gankyuu got away from the mushi, but obviously she did, since she goes on the live one thousand more years.
Past then, it is also known the Gankyuu met other people with apples, and took the fruit from them, so they could disappear, and she could live with the burden of living forever. She felt that it was her duty to suffer for forever, since she felt her family’s death was her fault.

Ultimately, she got two more apples, totaling to three apples inside of her. It’s not known how long they were in her, but obviously, it’s less than 1000 years.

And that’s basically all you know about her past, save for a few minor details that I’ll refer to later.

When the story starts, you actually see Gankyuu as a villainous character. She approaches Rinnie, the main heroine, with a spoon in her hand, and proceeds to gouge her eye out.

Nice, right?

But there’s a reason she did this-and not because she’s evil or wanted to kill her or anything. Ultimately, eternal life is a burden laced with suffering and pain around every corner. Gankyuu didn’t want that for Rinnie. She knew that Rinnie had come into contact with an apple, but she wasn’t sure if it had rooted yet. So she thought there might still be time to save the girl from eternal damnation. Gankyuu could take on the burden of killing Rinnie, to save her from eternal life.

Of course, by the time Gankyuu attacked Rinnie, it was too late. The apple already rooted in Rinnie, so her humanness was already lost. And because of this, Gankyuu took it upon her herself to take care of Rinnie-to make sure she’d be okay. And also, to convince Rinnie to hand her apple off to Gankyuu. Not because she was lustful for power, but because it’s her burden, and her burden alone, to own an apple.

But, once she brought it up with Rinnie, she of course declined. Gankyuu has lived her entire life in the lonely dark, and Rinnie was going to change that. And as nice as that sounds… Gankyuu wasn’t going to get her hopes up. As a woman who has felt every kind of betrayal over and over and over again, she’s learned that happiness isn’t a possibility for a person with an apple.

[ Personality ] : Gankyuu’s chief motivator in life is her fear of loneliness, but also her acceptance that she will never be anything except for alone. She pushes people away because she can’t grow close to them. Because she doesn’t have any right to make friends, since she deserves to suffer. She threatens people because she’s ultimately scared to grow close to them-she’s afraid of the broken heart she’ll receive once they leave her.

Because, inevitably, everyone will leave her.

That is, until Rinnie comes into her life.

Rinnie, a person who also held the burden of the apple. Gankyuu usually goes about this one way-and that is to take the apple off their hands. To take their suffering and make it her own, since she’s the only one who deserves that kind of treatment.

But Rinnie refused.

Unlike all the other selfish people who had the apple, Rinnie was a kind woman. She felt sorry for Gankyuu and figured if she was going to be alive forever, maybe it would be easier if she had a companion. Gankyuu never really considered this, since… who would choose suffering forever, over being taken out of their misery?

However, once she warms up to Rinnie, and the two grow extremely close, she starts to show her weaker sides. The sides she’s never been able to show before, and probably never knew that she had. Guriko truly is a very loving girl, even though she doesn't show it. Despite being kind of scary and overall very intimidating, she really only acts that way because she's scared and lonliness adn heartbreak. And she only really figured that out once Rinnie came into her life.

It’s obvious that being separated from Rinnie is hard on Gankyuu, because she’s never really relied on anyone before. And when she can be so weak around Rinnie…

Well, she’s grown to like her-love her even! She’s learned not to love anyone over the years, but with Rinnie, it’s different. Because they’re stuck in eternity forever, so she finds that it’s all right to be friends with her. And... it almost stings with how much Guriko really does care about Rinnie. She gets that she has made a weakness out of Rinnie, but... that's all right.

She can be a little weak. As long as Rinnie is beside her.

Sacrifice is a huge part of Guriko's personality. She's the kind of girl who believes in happiness for all people, even if she is required to suffer. She has long since sacrificed her body and soul to saving people with apples, as well as innocent bystanders, and she believes this to be perfectly A-okay. Why have tons of people live and suffer forever, when she could take the burden of living off their shoulders?

She does understand pain, however. But she also believes that pain is what she deserves, so she takes on the suffering of all people. Guriko blames herself for the death of her family, and believe it's her destiny to repent for that forever.

It's plain to say that Guriko, even though she's over one thousand years old, is still very much a child at heart. Despite her... slightly gorey way of life, Guriko simply believes in happiness for all humans-and strictly believes this is a definite possibility. Some (most?) would claim this is a very ignorant thing to believe in, and truth be told... it probably is. But after being so exposed to all the harsh cruelties of life, and still be able to look for the good in people? Guriko definitely has a lot of faith in people-especially the ones that call her ignorant.

As I said in the last paragraph, Gankyuu is very child-like. As such, she often speaks like a child, referring to herself in the third person most of the time. It is unknown why exactly she talks like this. However, when giving a speech and/or placed in a very serious situation, Guriko drops the third person, and acts... well, mature! Like the one thousand-year-old she is.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] : .

✘ abilities ✘

All of Gankyuu’s abilities are because of two factors. One, her apples, and two, her age.

** Gankyuu actually makes a note that the longer you’ve had an apple-rather, how ripe the apple is-the stronger the apple will make you. So there are two factors of strength when considering that apples, one being how many apples are inside of you, and two being how long they have been there.

So Gankyuu currently has two apples, one that has been in her for 1000 years, and one that has been there for a few months.

Gankyuu used to have two other apples in her, but she implanted them into her two comrades when they were on the verge of death. It’s not known how long those apples were in her, nor if the “ripeness” of the apple traveled into the people she implanted them in, or if it restarted in the transfer between people.

immortality.
Guriko cannot die. She could be torn apart limb from limb, and she would still return back to normal in a matter of months.

recovery rate.
However, small wounds like cuts and scrapes heal up almost instantly. It all depends on the size of the wound.

"ultimate" form.
A little hard to explain! Basically, Guriko is powerful enough to not... really have control over her body. She claims that this is why she uses spoons as her weapons--anything more powerful and she would lose complete control

pain resistance.
Guriko cannot feel pain. Kind of... self-explanitory :D;;;;

lack of feeling/temperature.
Tying in with the last one, Guriko can't feel things like temperature. This does not, however, extend to emotional feeling.

In a more emotional sense, Guriko is very very... unstable. Given she's been living a horrible philosophy for... basically her entire 1011 years alive, she's pretty much ruined herself from that. She has a low self-image, and doesn't really care about what happens to her. Everyone is more important than her, so to speak.

[ Other Important Facts ] :  She doesn't wear shoes!
