People sure do suck sometimes

The more I think about this the more angry I get. Yesterday I went to the school I work at to get things ready for when program opens next week (the trip was a total waste of time for reasons I won't go into here). While I was there I stopped to see how the garden the Kindergarten class planted in the spring was doing. It wasn't doing well. ( Read more... )

ranting, totally giving the side eye, gardening

That's just awful. I know when my mom worked at the local Lutheran preschool they had to deal with a lot of vandalism--people scrawling inverted crosses on the wall and such. I don't know why people need to behave like that.

Yikes, that's even worse since it's much less likely to be a crime of opportunity committed by bored/restless individuals ('Look, a garden outside of a grade school...let's smash it!') and more a deliberate attempt to make a statement. Plus it's more costly to clean up.

People are bizarre.

It could've been a statement... but I think it was probably just some older kids stirring up trouble. There's a middle school right by the preschool and well... our neighborhood doesn't seem to have any shortage of juvenile idiots.

Oh, probably. I just think that sort of vandalism takes a little more planning...well, at the very least they need to buy/steal (or take from their parents' garage) some spray paint.

Some people are truly vile, it's disgusting.

This is unfortunately true. I did some stupid crap as a kid and am appropriately embarrassed by it now, so if the vandals were kids (quite likely) I really hope they grow out of this behavior and look back with regret.

There are just some ugly people in this world. :/ And it's a shame that those people have not a single bout of consideration for the ones that nurtured that garden.

I'm still hoping they come to regret it later, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope. The kids will get over it..but they shouldn't have to.

At least it looked like some of the tomatoes and squashes were salvageable.

Ugh. This infuriates me as much as people getting drunk and smashing their beer bottles all over a school playground, leaving glass shards everywhere. Grrrrrr. Stupid, stupid people out there. I cannot comprehend what a lack of a life you must have if the activity of the day is smashing some children's garden. >_<#

The beer bottle thing happens a lot at our school. I asked if they've ever considered putting up security cameras, but the school board won't pay for it. I wonder if just putting up the signs ('This area is under 24 hour surveillance') could work as a deterrent.

Yeah, I do wonder who would go to school to drink and smash gardens (the two may very well be related), since I'm sure there are other places to do your (likely) underage drinking.

Hmm...the sign is a good idea, and it might be a bit more cost friendly than the real thing. My old UPS Store boss had a fake camera, and most people took it seriously, thinking it was an antique or something (it did look really old XD). We'd get the occasional person asking us, "I lost my keys/wallet/whatever out in the parking lot...can you review your video surveillance to see if it looks out at the parking lot?" XD Then we'd either tell them it only works in store, or have to tell them it's fake. So you might consider a fake camera as well as a sign.
