Clockwork Heart by Dru Pagliassotti:
That morning, she'd done what she could to set up her own advantages. She'd left a note in Cassi's purse containing Kyle's letter and describing where she was going and why. She didn't know what Cassi would do when she found it, but no icarus flew without filing a flight plan.

Dang, this book sounds really good- I wish I could find it in one of my libraries!

You know, I think there's a copy of the book for sale in the public library sale bin right now for fifty cents. Which is weird, seeing how that library doesn't have the book in its stacks. Anyhow, I could go back on Monday (books to return) and grab it if it's still there, and mail it out to you if you'd like. PM me if this sounds like a good plan.

(and sorry for having just spoiled a bunch of the book for you with this review!)

Well I actually only read the first few paragraphs of the review, for that very reason :) I am pretty good at dodging spoilers when I can see them coming! If you are willing to mail me the book, I would be delighted to get it, if you are serious in your offer!

Let me pop round the library this afternoon and make sure it's still there. If so, it's all yours! I'll be in touch :)

It sounds like the author is excellent at world-building which is such a difficult thing to do, especially if you're doing it from scratch.

That's exactly what I was thinking with the comprehensive metal-working language, and how well that reinforced the idea of Ondinium being a very grounded in ores and metals. The icarii's wings too, are made from ondium, a metal mined from the mountains around Ondinium that's lighter than air, so it floats. And other items made from ondium appear from time to time in the story as well, not just bunged in because the author suddenly remembered them, but as integral objects in the story.

It really is an astonishingly good book.
