I can not come up with a single guiding principle for my research. This is disastrous for my peace of mind. see, I thought about that (but not, of course, in a thoughtful and interesting way as you seem to have), and the Shakers have some weird stuff to say about the telegraph too...but now I'd be stealing your idea! This is why I can't ever accomplish anything. I suppose I shouldn't ask for suggestions if that's going to be a hindrance to me...but I certainly wouldn't mind a shitty book!
