Summary: She believes in everything-in clouds, in trees, in helium, in the fact that shadows are the only things that let you see the light.
Written for 1sentence. This was more of an exercise to get me used to the pairing. Hopefully there will be more fic coming later.

1. Walking.
“Walk with me,” It says, and that’s the beginning of something, though neither knows it at the time.

2. Waltz.
She does not think in fanciful poetic terms because that adds a layer of romance to her life that isn’t really there; nevertheless, theirs is a dance, no matter how she looks at it.

3. Wishes.
“I can give you anything you want,” It says, and they both ignore the fact that this isn’t true; maybe she keeps coming back hoping that it will be.

4. Wonder.
Some people are afraid when they stare into a black hole, as if it shows them their death, but she’s seen death and all she has left is wonder.

5. Worry.
She never tells Nita, because then Nita would worry, and she does enough of that for both of them.

6. Whimsy.
She’s wearing a stone at her throat and It reaches out to touch it; she pulls back-there are some things she’s not ready for.

7. Wasteland.
It says she’ll be there at the end of time, as the universe dies at Its feet, and she can see that barren expanse as if it were happening now.

8. Whisky and rum.
Once, in a crowded bar at the Crossings, she feels someone watching her back, but of course there is no one there (is this what it’s going to be like from now on?).

9. War.
She never forgets what It is, never forgets that they are on opposite sides, because she can feel that line drawing into a circle and bringing them together, or maybe she’s the only one changing.

10. Weddings.
“You could have a life,” It says, and she tells him that she does-it’s just not the life of marriages and deaths and people-it’s more than that.

11. Birthday.
Once, and only once, she makes the mistake of asking It about the beginning; she makes a good show of not being afraid, but takes philosophical questions to Spot from then on.

12. Blessing.
Being closer to It means that everything is brighter, more immediate, and most days it feels like her heart is breaking from beauty.

13. Bias.
She stopped thinking she was right a long time ago-no one is right at the time, and even It is right, most of the time.

14. Burning.
Where they touch, her skin burns with the icy heat of a dying star (but she doesn’t know what It feels, maybe nothing).

15. Breathing.
The only sound in the darkness is her breathing (It doesn’t breathe, though sometimes It tries, for her benefit, but It always forgets, in the end).

16. Breaking.
She checks her name in the spell and realizes that it’s changed, turning to say something, she stops when she meets Its eyes.

17. Belief.
She believes in everything-in clouds, in trees, in helium, in the fact that shadows are the only things that let you see the light.

18. Balloon.
When she was younger, she went through a phase where she learned how to make balloon animals, and that’s what It’s doing now, but with darkness and mist.

19. Balcony.
It laughs at her, while she hangs by her fingertips from a ledge of rock on a planet that is not her own (she hates It).

20. Bane.
Because she’s a wizard, there’s no way that she can’t think about It everyday, at least that’s what she tells her sister.

21. Quiet.
If she tried to tell someone that It was quiet and thoughtful, she would just be laughed at, but it’s true-It’s quiet like she’s quiet.

22. Quirks.
She develops a sideways flick of her eyes whenever she begins a spell looking for something (someone) that isn’t there.

23. Question.
She nearly asks Tom about how to tell right from wrong, but she can’t figure out what words to use and then Kit is asking something about his insane DVD player.

24. Quarrel.
Even as his lips find hers she’s readying a spell in the back of her mind because she’s not sure which It would like having more-her or her dead.

25. Quitting.
To get out of this-all of this-she’d have to give up wizardry, and she can’t do that, even if it might be the end result, either way.

26. Jump.
She won’t let herself show surprise, even though she usually can’t predict what It’s going to do; showing surprise would be a concession that she’s not willing to make.

27. Jester.
When she meets the Amadaun for the first time, he says something cryptic about embers in the dragon’s breath and she knows exactly what he mans, but pretends to be as confused as Nita, for everyone’s sake.

28. Jousting.
When she kisses It, she thinks that this is just practice for something else, when maybe it will be a lightning bolt between them, or an arrow.

29. Jewel.
There are stars in her hair when they stand against the blackness of space like this.

30. Just.
Logically, she knows that taking a life is wrong, but that doesn’t stop her from wondering about the exceptions (there’s more to death than life).

31. Smirk.
“Did you think this could end any other way?” she asks, smirking, but of course this isn’t the end, and never will be.

32. Sorrow.
She knows more about It than any other wizard, ever, and that’s why, even after a victory, she finds somewhere to be alone and cries, because it’s tragic, it’s tragic, and there’s nothing she can do.

33. Stupidity.
It reaches for something behind her, but they’re so close now that she’s already anticipated the movement and reached out to stop him; of course, he can do the same with her.

34. Serenade.
When she focuses, she can hear the universe as It hears it; when she says it’s beautiful, It says yes, but only when you can’t hear it.

35. Sarcasm.
There is one time when she asks the Pig about the meaning of life and he gives her an answer, not a complete one, but something (his answer is “You already know.”).

36. Sordid.
Its hand at the small of her back makes her very aware of all the nerves in her body, even though she should be focusing on shield spells, or something, because It’s trying to throw them all off of this planet, as violently as possible.

37. Soliloquy.
“Shut up,” she says, cutting It off in the middle of Its gloating, Everything’s different, and you know it.”

38. Sojourn.
On the other edge of the galaxy, she finds a swampy planet, but she leaves before she can find any caves-she isn’t ready to see herself.

39. Share.
Her Ordeal was a lot more than her becoming a wizard or making a new race of sentient beings or becoming a bit more like quicklife-she always had a bit of the Lone Power in her, but now she was in it and the Manual and everything, though she didn’t realize it at first.

40. Solitary.
Maybe she goes back because It’s always alone-after all, she knows for a fact that she can’t change It (that will take much longer than she has, even if it’s already happening), so she must be coming back because no one should have to die alone.

41. Nowhere.
“It’ll be in my Timeheart,” she says, and Kit says, “Well yeah, redeemed,” which is fine for him.

42. Neutral.
In some ways, she should be the most neutral of all of them, but more often than not, she feels like the least.

43. Nuance.
“I’m going to have to kill you,” It whispers in her her ear, and she just reaches up and touches Its face, since she’s known that from the beginning.

44. Near.
The thing a lot of people don’t seem to understand is that It’s everywhere, otherwise there would be no contrast for life.

45. Natural.
After a particularly bad defeat, she goes to the moon to be alone and finds It there, as perhaps she’d known It would be; she tries to pummel Its chest with her fists, but gives up and lets It hold her wrists as she cries.

46. Horizon.
“You don’t know what’s coming next,” she says, “You think you do, but you don’t; you’re as clueless as the rest of us.”

47. Valiant.
She doesn’t have enough juice left in her to come up with another spell, so she simply glares at It and brushes the hair out of her face; she doesn’t believe in miracles anymore.

48. Virtuous.
There is no question that she’s not virtuous, not when Its hand is skimming the inside of her thigh and her head is thrown back, eyes closed, so that she can just feel, but she still has her wizardry, and she assumes that means something.

49. Victory.
Nita and Kit hug just a little awkwardly and Carmela grins, but Dairine’s not looking at them; she’s thinking about the next time, and the time after that, when they won’t win.

50. Defeat.
This-this whole thing-is not defeat; it’s something that has to happen, because of the way things are, because of wizardry, because someone has to save the universe, because there’s that darkness inside her and she knows.
