Absolutely not.
[unsolicited anecdote] I went through something similar with my own grandfather back in 2003 - he took a nasty fall right around Christmas '02, and spent the next three months in a nursing home before dying in early March. We all said he should have died the night he fell. [/unsolicited anecdote]
It's not selfish to recognize that the thing you may want - keeping your loved one around forever no matter what - is neither what your loved one wants (being around at full capacity or not at all) nor the best thing for him.
