Separate but equal IS NOT equal

Feb 17, 2004 22:52

There are many ways to lie to the American people. There are many analogies that can be drawn about gay marriage. There are many that could be true.

One thing is always true.

Separate but equal IS NOT equal. It isn't. On a moral level, it isn't. On a legal level, it isn't ( Read more... )

I think you might appreciate this entry by a friend of mine. I found it to be relatively accurate.

And I totally agree with you. Regardless of one's religious beliefs, gay couples are still citizens of this country and thusly "endowed by their creator with certain, unalienable rights, and among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Sound familiar, Dubya?

His religious beliefs should not affect the way he attempts to runs our country. Because--as much of a shock as it may be to dear ol' George--not everyone has the same religious beliefs, or even the same religion.

Imagine that.

Thanks for the link! :D

Somehow I doubt it's familiar to him. He doesn't seem too well-read if his favorite children's book is The Very Hungry Caterpillar--that came out when he was 20!

"You... you mean there's more than one religion? Well then, I'll have to be a bit more secretive! I'll call my committee faith-based iniatives instead of Christian initiatives then."

Gay marriage os wrong in the smae sense that muder is wrong, a moral, religious opinion taking precedence in the way our country(founded on the basis of moral corectness(cristianity))is governed. If it makes an individual happy to murder someone that does not make it right, even though they have been "endowed by their creator with certain, unalienable rights, and among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Murder is still wrong, and it would be difficult to find someone who dissagrees with that statement; the same way gay marriage is a violation of " the sacred institution of the union of a man and a woman in holy matrimony". Both are violations of moral religious views, the difference is that one is much older and has been illigalized by law, just as gay marriage and unions should be!

But can you really say that in America, marriage is sacred? Heterosexual marriage? We've got shows like the Bachelor, and the Bachelorette, and Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire, and Britney Spears is running off to Vegas and getting married only to say it was a joke the next day. Who can say they have the right to deny to two people that love each other the chance to celebrate that love? Everybody's approaching it like, "Oh my gosh, the gay people in love are coming! They want to get married and love each other and live their lives and be left alone! Hide the children!"

Exactly. Let's just hope they don't believe his party in the '04 election.

What do you think it was founded on then? That's what I've found so far. Well, it was supposedly founded on equality anyway.

Supposedly being the operative word.

Well, that's what it says in the constitution and that's what it could be if we had a competent president.

Yes. That is to say, I agree with everything you've said, and more.

At this point, I'm not sure whether I'm "proud to be an American" or not. On the one hand, we are making progress. Painfully, agonizingly slow progress. On the other hand, there are so many anti-gay-marriage acts being passed (or at least proposed) that I don't know what to think.

This is not, and should not, be a Christian country. It should be a free country. For everyone. ("In God we trust." Why is that still on the fucking money I handle every day?)

Either humanity is going down the drain, or the Bush administration is using a very different definition of "equal" that I've never heard of.

Bush administration's dictionary:

equal: a word that should generally be ignored and if it must be used at all, twist the truth and make sure you characterize the other group as "evil" or "satanic"
