From Bad to Good (Poetry)

When prompted by Professor Kuin to survey my friends and family on the topic of why so many people are turned off by poetry, I thought I knew what responses I would receive. I suspected most people would suggest they were lovers of poetry to avoid any further inquiries from me about why they didn't enjoy poetry if they answered 'no'. However, I ( Read more... )

So you got the three pro-poetry and the three anti-poetry survey going on. I think your father is a smart man. I would have to agree that poetry can never fully express a feeling, words do fall flat of an action. Punching or kissing someone is the most honest expression. I actually think the professor discussed this in tutorial last week, something about Roland Barthes writing a condolence letter to his friend whose mother had passed away. That Barthes found it extremely difficult to express his grief for his friend's position. The best and most simplist way is to just say sorry that you have to go through this ( ... )

I also agree with Lesley-Anne, your father does come off as a smart man. My friends and I have debated many times about whether or not emotions can be truly expressed and personally, I don't think they can either. In my opinion, it is never possible for someone to understand how you truly feel about a specific thing. For example, a lover could never understand or truly grasp "how" you love them. Of course, they can have an idea - usually stemming from their own love for you or by comparing your outwardly emotions to the universal concepts of love, but they will never truly witness your insides and be able to feel the exact way you do about them ( ... )

Hi Janice, I really liked your post, the ideas you raised about love really got me thinking. As unoriginal as this might sound I must agree with you, Lesley-Anne, and Lisa that words fall short of describing what a person really feels. It's true that no one can stand in your shoes and feel exactly what you're feeling at a given moment. It's kind of lonely to think about though, that you can never truly know how someone feels about you. Anyhoo, The sonnet you picked is also one of my favourites, for the same reason you picked it as a better love poem. The honesty with which Shakespeare describes his love is more romantic and touching than a thousand, "Your eyes are as blue as the sky" type compliments.
