Nature Poetry: Canadian Content, Wordsworth and The Religious Perspective

Feb 09, 2006 13:45

I can't help but do a Canadian Content post this week, it is just too easy. Canadian literature has always been about nature, after all, Canada is a large, beautiful country with plenty of natural phenomenon to be seen. The earliest Canadian authors were very aware of this, as they were of course immigrants from Britain and were in most cases awe ( Read more... )

Nor should you make any apologies Janice, as I found all that you've said to ring true, at least for me. As to how much of nature is real and how much is perspective, I think that depends on who is observing. For myself, I don't believe I know the total reality of nature as I'm not much of a camper and thus can not know. Great post yet again Janice, hope you have a good reading week!

Yes, I wasn't planning on apologizing and I thank you for the support. Anyhow, I am not at all a camper, but I do have a great appreciation of nature and I try to express that through my concern for recycling, not littering and my dedication to vegetarianism. Although I would never impose my values upon others, I do secretly hope that others will share in my beliefs. Nevertheless, I do try to be non-judgemental, sometimes it is just more difficult than not.

Wishing you a great reading week,

Janice

How come almost everytime I read your posts I have the urge to start my comment with 'Wow'? I just wanted to ask for a further explaination between sex and nature. So sex creates life i.e.-baby making and nature gives a new sense of life to someone who perhaps has lost it? I mean I get mother nature and that she creates and destroys and how that connection is made to sex. Could you perhaps give an example?

Well Lesley-Anne, it seems to me you understand the connection perfectly well. Sex can make one feel alive as well as create life, as nature can remind someone that they are alive as well as nature creates life. As for an example, do you mean a poetic example? If so, I recommend "The Lily Bed" by Canadian Confederate poet, Isabella Valancy Crawford. You may find the entire poem here: http://www.poemhunter.com/p/m/poem.asp?poet=3050&poem=13582.

Once you have read it I think the connection will become clearer. I hope I have helped.
