Everyday Tragedies--was this phrase said in lecture or did I really make this up?

Why is it so bright out? I hate this time of year, except that school is coming to an end and I couldn't be happier, I am drained and in need of an extended break ( Read more... )

Well Janice, I am not going to say what I think the answer is, even though your discussion of the poem was excellant I am more interested in your opening paragraph where you seem heated, and I like that! I got what you were suggesting in tutorial about the one meaning soley the man, I even nodded to your comment, I have only taken one feminist class in university but I would consider myself able to comprehend the broader scope of feminism and I understood your quick comment, at the time it was said in a friendly manner, kinda like a joke, the professor turned his head and I believe someone said no to your little but full comment. I liked your comment and didnt detest it, if it seemded I did so I apologize. I like the feminist in you, I say keep on, keep on. Til then there is only one more class and alas one more tutorial.

Thanks Lesley-Anne, I appreciate the support. Interestingly I brought up the situation in my Women's Studies class because we were reading a text by one of the Grimke sisters, in which that very quote is written. My Professor wasn't surprised that people took issue with what I said, that is what the whole feminist movement has been about, people not wanting to accept the truth. Well it certainly was a lesson for me to keep my opinions to myself!

Hi Janice, I really enjoyed your post, as I have all of them :) As to your question, I think you've hit upon the answer yourself. At least it sounds right to me. About you feminist comment, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I also happen to be a feminist myself, all my life I've been told. Whenever I heard anybody talking about two people becoming one, I also figured it was a nice way to talk about sex. But the line you said makes more sense, unfortunately for us eh? Anyhoo, keep up the great work, even if there is only one more week left. Ciao,

Your comment in class made me think very much of Sadie Plant's "Zeroes and Ones", which is about feminism and technology and cyber culture and looks at all of these things in a new way. I think your comment in class was valid. But I think that the discussion was on a different track and would have needed a stronger push to get moving in the direction you proposed!

To me, the question asked by the speaker at line 44 is why the world now has order imposed upon it, why he has gained such a human perspective of his own, one that shapes the world around him and imbues it with meaning. To me, it seems that he has not gained the woman's perspective but rather he has abstracted his experience from hers - he has drawn from her ordering spirit but found one very much his own, which now, being unleashed through the catalyst of the woman's presence & singing, imposes structure and significance on his experience of the world.
