[ July 17 - Sam's disappearance ]

The other side of the bed was cold when Jess slid her arm across it, looking for Sam's broad back, or his arm, or - as on one memorable occasion - his calf. But there was nothing, just the cool of fresh, unwrinkled sheets, a bed that hadn't been slept in. She blinked her eyes open and pushed herself up on her elbow and looked around the house, but ( Read more... )

John had never been a heavy sleeper -- not even before he'd gone off to war. So when someone knocked on his door (earlier than anyone had a right to be visiting a person unless something was wrong), he was up like a shot. Hair a bit mussed and sleep still marring the corners of his eyes, John went to the door. He opened it, and in that moment when he saw Dean standing there, the dawn of a new day creating a small halo around him, John knew something couldn't be good.

"What is it?" he said, not bothering to waste time with paltry greetings.

"Something's got Sam," said Dean, long experience telling him his father didn't need to be eased into the situation. "Jess woke up without him." He swallowed, forcing his shoulders straight under his own mounting distress. "All his things, too. Dad."

What the hell are we going to do?

As far as John knew, Sam and Jess hadn't been having any problems. Hell, they'd been happy, practically the happiest couple around as far as John had been concerned. Sam wouldn't just take off without telling her -- or at least Dean or himself. Not unless--

Not unless something was wrong. Not unless something was wrong or the island had played the ultimate cruel joke on them all.

"Well, what are we waiting for?" he practically barked, then whirled around and began gathering up supplies (shotgun, knives, holy water, the works). "If he's out there, we're gonna find him."

Dean followed on his father's heels, helping scoop up supplies with an effiency born of two decades worth of daily practice. His heart was pounding, relief that John seemed to believe there was a chance of finding Sam doing nothing to ease the urgency buzzing beneath Dean's skin.

"Dinosaur territory first? They said that's happened before."

There was no way Sam could be gone. Not after everything he'd been through. Not after everything she'd been through. Not after not even death hadn't been able to keep them apart. No, he had to be somewhere, and she was damn well going to find him and bring him home.

"Which way are we searching first?" she said, dressed and armed and ready to go.

"Dinosaur territory," Dean answered her, already moving towards the path. "We'll circle the beach to it, save some time."
