It wasn't that she was expecting Sam home before dark, but she'd been hoping. Hoping to spend a little time with him, hoping to have a chance to reassure him the interview was going to go great. But as the night got later and later she finally gave in, left him a note - short and to the point - and changed for bed ( Read more... )

Sam gasped when he woke up, but he wouldn't be able to tell you if he'd woken up before or after it happened. He had no precognition left in him, but there was something that made him wake up. Maybe it was the presence of someone else. Maybe it was just that something hurt suddenly and it was his nose and he was awake and trying to understand what was going on when he looked to see what had landed on him.

And decided he was still dreaming.

It couldn't be. It couldn't.

"Jess?" he exhaled desperately, eyes wide. "Jess, is that you?" And oh god, but his nose was...broken, he thought.

Jess wasn't sure which came back first, her voice or her freedom, but she used them both simultaneously.

"Sam!" she said, scrambling to her hands and knees and looking around frantically. It wasn't their bedroom, which on any other day would've freaked her out but it wasn't even close to the most frightening thing that was happening. "Sam, there's someone in the apartment, oh my god, he's not human--"

She couldn't see him, he wasn't standing there anymore, but that didn't stop her heart from pounding, didn't stop her from groping for something to use as a weapon.

Sam was sitting up slowly, trying not to touch his nose too much because it was definitely not in the whole one-hundred percent okay way it'd been a couple seconds ago, but it so didn't matter because he was staring at Jess and she was alive and breathing and he nearly rocketed forward as he tugged her into a tight hug in his arms. "Jess, it's okay," he promised (a bit nasally). "It's just us, you're safe. You're alive and you're safe, I promise."

She squirmed to get away, to be able to see what was happening, but Sam's arms were familiar and they were safe and when nothing bad happened in the next few seconds she started to relax. A little.

That was when everything else that was strange about this situation started to sink in.

"Sam? Sam? Where did you come from? What's...." She looked around again, this time taking in what was there instead of just what wasn't. "What's going on?"
