[At last. Peaceful, mostly sunny. No sign of the moon, or masks, or costumes.

...And Nephry is moving through the plaza at the pace and with the general stiff gait of an old woman.

Fitting, she thinks.

Near the fountain she sits on a bench, opening the journal on her lap. She's never been one to make announcements too personal, or to call unnecessary ( Read more... )

I love seeing snow! Eventhough it gets really cold. It doesn't stay for very long, so it makes the season all the more precious, I think.

Did you live somewhere that snowed all the time, Miss Osborne?

Yes, I...did. [ouch. In her heart she does still live in Keterburg.] It is quite beautiful there.

Ohhh, I can only imagine. Where did you live before you came to Luceti, uh, if I may ask?

In a northern city called Keterburg. I've lived there my entire life.

You went to all the trouble of making an announcement and didn't bother to mention your birthday? How humble of you.

This is hardly an announcement.

[a significant pause]

You remembered.

It is a publicly broadcast statement, is it not?

You seem surprised, Nephry. Did you think I would forget? [Never mind that in recent times he only ever bothered to visit her back home on her wedding day. Past birthdays have likely passed without much more than a nod of acknowledgement.]

I am unaccustomed to you acknowledging it.

Back home it doesn't snow very much, so back there, I kept wanting the snow. But... here, it just ended up being a hassle after a while, actually.

A hassle? How so?

You need to shovel it, and it's cold and wet and though it's neat at first over time it just gets on top of and into everything and makes a whole set of new chores.

Hm. ...All of your problems with it are valid.

But you learn to appreciate it over time.

[Perhaps it's better that Dist didn't see Nephry the following days after the so-called "destruction" of Luceti. He's at Seventh heaven, playing the piano. It' certainly very calming on his nerves, and eases his irritation and frustration at just about everything right now. One of his better hobbies to have gotten into, definitely. And he's become quite the player, with all the practice he's been doing.

The message heard over the journal cuts off his playing, though, and Dist tunes in quietly, reading and listening to the replies before he makes his own. It's only when he sees Jade's that he nearly chokes. B-B-Birthday?! It's Nephry's--?! Rrgh...he forgot. With all the madness happening, he completely forgot. Damn. Damn, damn, damn, damn, DAMN. He has to think. Come on, Saphir, what kind of thing would nephry like to receive on her birthday?!]

[It's only after a few minutes of deep thinking and minor panic that Dist remember that, hey, there is a piano kind of just sitting here. Under him. He could play her something! He's confident enough in his skills that he'd be able to play something she'd enjoy. And if it's winter she so greatly likes...

Well, he can manage to play something with a winter theme. When he's near the end, Dist lets the last note hover in the air, dimming down quietly to nothing.]

I do hope that suffices, Nephry. I'm afraid it's all I can manage, for now, for a birthday gift.
