Hey look! I'm posting!!
Hopefully I'll be doing more of this. I want to do more of this. Either way, have a recap of last year.
1. What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?
Had surgery, got married, and went to Puerto Rico!
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
The only thing I resolved to do at the beginning of 2012 was to do whatever was necessary to make sure I got through my surgery successfully. And I did! I guess the only other minor resolution was to get through the wedding planning without losing my mind, and/or killing anyone, and no one's dead, so hey!
For this year, the goal is to take better care of my physical and emotional self. I've been very bad at both of these and the results are becoming apparent. So, eating better, exercising more, and trying to spend more time on creative pursuits and with people who matter to me.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not really, but it seems like everyone and their Aunt Gladys is pregnant right now!
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Uncle Stu passed away a few weeks before the wedding, after a very long illness. A college friend, whom I'd loved dearly but lost touch with, lost a battle with lymphoma after that. And most devastating of all,
angelicillusion passed away at the beginning of December, after a lifelong battle with kidney disease (although that simplifies some very complicated stuff). Just writing that sentence was hard. I have trouble believing some days that it's true, that she's *really* gone. It's so hard, and I miss her terribly.
5. What countries did you visit?
Puerto Rico is the only place I visited, but I don't know if it's really its own country or part of ours. To be fair, neither do they.
6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
More money, a better organized life and apartment, more money, and perhaps a smaller waistline. (Oh, and did I say more money?)
7. What dates from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
My ankle surgery
Seeing Pulp
Seeing the Black Keys
The day my Uncle Stu died
My Wedding
Puerto Rico
Getting violently ill in Puerto Rico
Finding out that Jon died
Seeing Bruce Springsteen live for the very first time in New Jersey
Hurricane Sandy, and all the surrounding shenanigans
Getting the call that
angelicillusion had died.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Making big strides at work that I feel good about. Getting over ankle surgery pretty well. Having people tell me that
j_bkl and my wedding was one of the most fun (if not THE most fun) wedding they'd ever been to. Reorganizing and cleaning out several areas of my apartment, and planning to tackle even more as time goes on, and figuring out that it's really okay to tackle things one piece at a time.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not spending enough time with friends, especially
angelicillusion. I kind of sucked the big one at the work-life balance this year.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Bronchitis while recovering from the ankle surgery and a couple of colds and sinus infections, but on the whole I've been doing okay.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I'd say my new laptop, Dresden, but he was technically bought at the end of 2011. So, on that technicality, I will say my honeymoon trip, and my shiny new Samsung Galaxy SIII, which I love far more than I probably should.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
j_bkl. All of my excellent family and friends. Occupy Sandy.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
A grouping of senators who were dubbed "Team Rape" at their absolutely idiotic and backwards ideas about women, choice, safety, and responsibility. The way the Red Cross completely bungled Sandy relief. And most of all, a particular person who thought it was perfectly okay to get stinking, obnoxiously drunk, flash guests, grab the ipod to change the music, and, worst of all , use my husband as her own personal stripper pole at my wedding. I'm still trying to figure out how this particular Come-To-Jesus speech is supposed to go, as it won't be her first from me, and legions of my
other friends are asking me why I am still friends with her. It took me a few months to realize just how angry I actually was with her, too. As to why? I guess I didn't expect her to act any differently. However, it didn't occur to me right away that just because you expect something? Doesn't make it okay.
14. Where did most of your money go?
The wedding, the honeymoon, and life.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Getting married! Getting more Obama! Seeing Springsteen and The Black Keys!
16. What song will always remind you of 2012?
"Lonely Boy" - The Black Keys
"Somebody that I used to know" - Gotye
"Disco 2000" - Pulp
"The Way I am" - Ingrid Michaelson
"Rumor Has it" - Adele
"Call Me Maybe" - Carly Rae Jepson (because it's hopelessly catchy. And was unavoidable.)
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier, I think. Or at least as happy, with a few sad bits.
ii. thinner or fatter? fatter. But hopefully that will change soon.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer. But I'm hoping to change that, too.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Spending time with friends, especially with
angelicillusion.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Stressing out. Working. Stressing about working. Emotional Eating.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
With my family in Brooklyn.
21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
My mom and dad, and of course,
j_bkl. I seriously need to diversify this year.
22. Did you fall in love in 2012?
Have been in love since 2008. :)
23. How many one-night stands?
Nope! I learned my lesson the first time. Be careful with those - you might catch something. Like a husband. XD
24. What was your favorite TV program?
So very, very many to choose from. Justified, Game of Thrones, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Nashville, Arrow, Community, Once Upon a Time...and so many others.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Not hate so much as severe annoyance.
26. What was the best book you read?
The latest Dresden Files book (Cold Days), the first volumes of the Fables series, and The Diviners by Libba Bray. All terrific. Most of all, the book that ruled the year was A Storm of Swords. That book, man. I've broken bones that didn't knock me around as hard.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Embarrassingly enough, I don't think I really *got* Pulp or the Black Keys before this year. That made a huge difference in my life. New stuff I liked included Gotye, Adele, and Lake Street Dive.
28. What did you want and get?
A great wedding. A fixed ankle. A wonderful honeymoon.
29. What did you want and not get?
More money. More time with people I care about. More energy.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
The Avengers. Hands DOWN. However, I also enjoyed Argo, Hugo, The Hobbit, 21 Jump Street, What's My Number (seriously), Moonrise Kingdom, Wreck-it-Ralph Skyfall and a few others I'm not immediately calling to mind.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 32, and
j_bkl and I threw what is becoming our annual joint birthday fiesta.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A better work-life balance.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
Is it clean?
34. What kept you sane?
j_bkl,
quasisonic,
blergeatkitty,
airspaniel,
redstapler,
redesigner, my parents, the internet, and various movies and tv shows.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
airspaniel said earlier this year, that it's not a matter of which Avenger you'd want to hook up with, but which one you'd want to hook up with first. In my case, it's just the male Avengers, but any time Black Widow wants to grab drinks and get into trouble, she should call me.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The election. Choice. Marriage equality. Having to reinforce that women are indeed people. Also, Hurricane Sandy.
37. Who did you miss?
redesigner,
redstapler, and
angelicillusion.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
If I met you this year, I apologize for not remembering it was this year. But look at it this way, I already feel as though I've known you much longer!
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.
Don't wait until "later." Sometimes later is too late.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"I never knew that you'd get married..." - Pulp, "Disco 2000"
