Honestly I don't know much xmen lore, besides the few comics I've read. But, no, I didn't buy into that crap. BUT I admit I was entertained while watching the movie. But I realize it was far from what it could have been. I mean, did it have to be so fucking dramatic? Too ambitious, too over the top, and some of the special affects were really lame. And the music really pissed me off. Really, if you're trying to get people to react to the movie by killing them off or making them lose their powers, it starts to lose it's affect after oh say it happens to, everyone.
What can I say, I'm totally in love with Hugh Jackman's wolverine, even if he kind of sucks. (And his little romp through the woods scene was, lame.) I can't help it.
I did really like Jean Grey though. And Magneto and his gang (although they obliterated them too).
BUT overall, for a movie I enjoyed it. I didn't feel like I wasted my money.
I feared this would happen once Singer jumped to Superman.
There were like 5 different complicated story arcs that could have filled their own trilogies, respectively.. and Ratner botched them all and left them unresolved.
The things that really pissed me off:
1. Cyclops getting dicked once again
2. Ruining Phoenix story arc
3. Rogue becoming even more of a joke
The list could go on forever.. I guess it was fun to watch for eye candy.. it was entertaining, but it was sad to see all of the plot/character development created by Singer in the first two films ruined. I agree with what you said.. Ratner resorted to killing off characters, because he couldn't find another way to make the audience care.
If Ratner stays on for the Magneto and Wolverine standalones.. and X4-6, I will cry. :P
