[... Echo looks uncomfortable. Depressed, almost, and maybe confused. She's not entirely sure of how she's feeling, or how to ask this.

She glances to an object off-screen-the harmonica Romano gave her for her 'birthday'-before looking back at the camera.]How... How do you know if someone was one's 'friend'? What does it mean to have been that to ( Read more... )

(Wrath watches the girl on the screen. Moody--a bit confused. The question is posed--while she is looking off to the side. Before he sees her head turn back to the camera.)

(Wrath did not have friends on his own world--only subordinates and superiors, and siblings that were his peers or his superiors. He had no concept of what friendship was.)

(In Somarium, he calls certain people friends--but he uses the term based on an approximation of what the meaning is. The young woman who is asking about friendship probably has a better inkling of what it is.)

A friend is one that you cannot cut out of your life without difficulty.

(What the woman may or may not figure out, 'cut out of life' is just another term for kill.)

But... Echo has other people like that, and Echo does not think they would be considered a 'friend'.

[She can't imagine a life without Vincent, after all-but she knows that he's definitely not what would be considered a friend.]

(He assumes Echo is the speaker's name.)

Are those other people your enemies?

[Aww, Echo...]

Truthfully, the only ones who can answer that are the people involved... But, if I am to be asked on how one can tell that they're a friend, I believe that it is the feeling.

If one side cares for another, then that feeling is already considered a form of friendship.

... So if Echo cares for someone, then that a person is a friend?

A friend is someone who you enjoy spending your time with. They are someone who makes you feel happy and are nice to talk to.

Someone you enjoy spending time with...?

[... Happiness, huh? Echo's not entirely certain how to recognize that, but she thinks she's getting somewhere.]

And to be happy... that means to feel like smiling?

[Nod nod]

Yes. The people who make Chii smile are the people Chii considers friends.

[Granted Chii smiles a lot but still, you get the idea]

Friend, a person attached to another. Feelings of affection.

[She frowns slightly, not too noticeable. She wasn't totally familiar with such things and could only stick with books.]

Fond attachment, and if a person misses the other.

Then if Echo misses someone... that person was a friend.

[Oh, Jessamine remembers you.]

A friend is usually someone that you feel affection for - someone that you usually enjoy spending free time with.

That is what Echo is being told, yes...

[So... Spain, Alice, and Romano-they were her friends, weren't they?]

Are you still confused then? It seems rather straight forward to me.
