[Background] Not much is known about Echo's past, other than that she has served the Nightray family since she was born. In the present, her specific master is Vincent Nightray. She suffers from a condition that seems similar to split personality. Her true personality is someone known as "Zwei," also referred to as "Noise," but Echo is the dominant side for most of the current chapters, as Zwei is wounded early in the story. Though Echo serves Vincent faithfully, she is secretly annoyed by him.

Zwei appears in the first chapter in the series, as she possesses Gilbert. Afterwards, she forces him to attack Oz Bezarius, his master, who is then dragged into another dimension known as the "Abyss." Soon after returning to the normal world, Oz and a man called "Raven" revisit the Bezarius mansion, where Zwei is waiting for them. She takes control of Raven, before revealing the truth to Oz: it's actually been ten years since the boy disappeared into the Abyss, and that Raven is Gilbert (who's been adopted by the Nightray family). Thanks to Oz's words, though, Gilbert manages to wake up and shoot Zwei, who decides to escape after that.

Enter Echo, whose first appearance in Pandora Hearts is when she drops by Gilbert's mansion to give him a letter and bouquet from Vincent. Or rather, she comes across an unconscious Oz and leaves the items by him.

Not long after, under Vincent's orders, she begins searching for a boy called Phillipe West. Coincidentally, she finds him with Oz, whom she takes a few moments to recognize. While brandishing a knife, she commands Phillipe to come with her. Sadly, things don't go as planned, and he ends up running away like a sane human. That just won't do, though, so Echo chases after him--with Oz chasing after her. She tells him not interfere, to which he replies that just because it's none of his business doesn't mean it shouldn't matter to him. This actually strikes Echo somewhere, and she tells him that he can come along if he wants, if he's not afraid of the danger.

To make a long story short after that, Echo wants to use Phillipe as a hostage against his father. Ultimately, she just goes ahead and attacks Phillipe's father, but is defeated. Before she can rejoin the battle, Vincent holds her from behind in a distinctly creepy manner and tells her to stay put.

Her next order to attack Sharon Rainsworth, a noble--an order she carries out successfully. Along with that, she--or rather, Zwei--controls Sharon's "Chain" to teleport Oz and his friend out of the dimension they're stuck in, but leaves their two companions behind. Then, she kidnaps Sharon. Afterwards, Vincent poisons both girls and attracts the attention of Xerxes Break, a man loyal to Sharon. He makes a deal with him, using the poisoned Sharon as leverage. To prove that the antidote he holds works, he cures Echo (through highly questionable means). Once he gets what he wants, though, he drops the antidote over the balcony before it can be administered to Sharon. Remembering Oz's words from before, Echo catches the antidote, thus saving Sharon.

Needless to say, Vincent is less than pleased. But ffffft, who cares about him, the creepy bastard

As of 4/22/10: Echo doesn’t appear for some time after saving Sharon. When she does appear, it’s on St. Bridget Day. Vincent’s given her a day off since he’s meeting with Gilbert, so she decides to go people-watching. This goes by uninterrupted until Oz comes along. Seeing as how it’s a holiday and all, he insists that she spend the day with him. For the most part, it goes well, and the two bond. D’awwwwwwww.

And then it ends with Oz’s "seal" moving, causing him to fall unconscious. The power affects Echo as well, and after returning her celebration outfit, she runs back home with Noise taunting her in what seems to partly be a hallucination.

Once she arrives, Vincent slaps her, being the abusive master he is. Eventually, he orders Echo to let Noise take over, which she does. He then orders to Noise to go to Sabrie. Lotti, another Baskerville, tags along.

The two play with Eliot Nightray and Reo for a while, before Break enters the scene-via stabbing Noise, might I add. He defeats Lotti as well and then leaves. What exactly happens after that is unknown, but Noise ultimately makes it back to Baskervilles’ "hideout," so to speak.

[Personality] As Break puts it, Echo first seems to be nothing more than a "mindless puppet." She follows Vincent's every order dutifully and without question, even if it's later revealed that she doesn't care much for her master. She also comes off as rather emotionless and cold, as shown when she doesn't hesitate to pull a knife on Oz. Along with her tendency to stare blankly, she is often blunt and somewhat stiff. Because of this, she can also appear rude, although it's more that she's just truthful. In fact, she's been shown to be respectful (in a monotonous sort of way) to the proper people.

She's also a very logical and orderly person who isn't particularly romantic, to say the least (though possible acts of romance tend to fluster her). When commenting on a festival, she talks about how people use the atmosphere to double the price of food--albeit a tad awkwardly, as she doesn't really know what to say and is just trying to show that she's not upset. Whereas others might vent out their feelings in their diary, she writes about what she observed at what time and maybe a comment about how she felt about the event. On that note, Echo seems to have a fixation of "recording." As she once tells Oz, "Echo needs to record everything that is seen by these eyes." If there's something she doesn't know, she needs to learn about it. While the exact reason for this is never given, part of it could be her attempt to learn about the world around her. However, she's not comfortable with actually interacting with others like an ordinary being. To her, it's not a world she can be a part of.

Also, although she's rather knowledgeable, she's fairly secluded, having spent her entire life as a servant. This is a girl who doesn't even know what happiness feels like. She has no sense of self-worth either. Though she doesn't enjoy the abuse she receives, she feels that she has no right to fight back, since she's just an "echo" of noise. It probably doesn't help that she likely received no affection (and no, what Vincent does doesn't count) all her life. Because of this, she tends to bottle up her emotions. Given the chance, though, it's shown that she's willing to release them without too much hesitation (in this case, she does so in a rant about her annoyance towards Vincent to Oz).

Ultimately, behind her cold and rational side, she is touched when shown genuine kindness and tends to be a little more emotional as well. In a later chapter, she honestly enjoys her time with Oz, even if she has difficulty expressing it. In return, there's a caring part of her. As she comments, things would be great if everyone cared about one another, whether or not it was any of their business. This is why she saves Sharon, even if it means betraying Vincent whom she has served for years.

As Zwei, however, she's essentially a creepy, vindictive child with a Vincent obsession and who seems to enjoy talking to her Chain. She's also far more talkative than Echo, as she enjoys taunting her opponents, almost always with a grin on her face. Neither does she have any concept of personal space, apparently, nor hold any affection towards Echo (likewise, Echo seems to be terrified of Zwei). Additionally, if there's a fight she knows she can't win, she's willing to leave.

[Specialties/Abilities] Echo is a talented fighter despite her physique, especially with the knife she keeps hidden up her sleeve. Not only does she have great endurance (quote Oz: 'What kind of body does this girl have!?'), but she's also very agile.

Zwei has a Chain known as Doldum, which takes the appearance of a chained and blindfolded woman. With it, she can control people's bodies and minds (though some are capable of resisting) using thin strings. Except, you know, she won't have access to it in Somarium.

[Affection] Unless your name is Vincent Nightray, Echo probably wouldn't be too happy about it. Heck, even if your name is Vincent Nightray That is, if she's not too busy feeling kind of shocked/awkward.

[Fighting] As said, Echo's pretty talented at fighting. Expect her to react accordingly if attacked.

[Other Permissions] ... This is iffy, given that we don't really know much about Echo. I'm going to say that with the basic facts, go ahead~

[Other Facts] She often refers to herself in third person and doesn't like being called anything other than "Echo."
