since i don't go by myth/fact garbanzo beans in text format, all that is, basically, wasted on me. i went to college for computer programming and networking, and hackers liked firefox shittake because they could hack it far more easily that IE-whatevers. probably, in part, because, TADA!!!!!!! - source code...grr...it doesn't have backdoors (firefox), so much as anyone who can think in varied computer coding stuff can look at said source code and figure out how to screw it up!!!! it's like learning spanish, only wayyyy easier.
i'm sorry, i feel really annoyed right now.
i'd rather stick to IE-whatever, because frankly downgrading involves uninstalls and reinstalls, and other nonsense, that takes up more time than it's worth. or even INSTALLS involve more time than they're worth. also, MANY other browsers go 'screwy' on necessary sites i use.
and those links you posted for deconverting are useless, but thanks for the suggesting, for a few seconds, i actually felt something almost like hope....

I guess it could have been an older/alpha version that was less secure. When were you in college? I've just got to know which version of Firefox they hacked! Could be an undocumented bug :-)

A "backdoor" in computing is basically a program that allows remote access to your machine, undetected and bypassing whatever security you have in place. You're right, Firefox doesn't open any backdoors (I hope IE doesn't, either! But I can't be absolutely sure, since it's not Open Source...) but I really can't see how this would make it easier for people to screw it up. Surely a lack of intentional security vulnerabilities would make life harder for malicious hackers?

Sorry the IE downgrade links didn't help.

Firefox is great! It is way better than IE in my opinion. I HATE IE. The newer versions SUCK! Opera is cool, too. You could try that. Don't remember the link to download it. Maybe you can design your own browser. Then you could get tons of moola and never have to look at IE again.

lol, i don't think i remember enough programming to be able to write my own browser...i've never liked firefox, though, i don't use many websites, but the ones that i do use, it doesn't always work with, the stuff like logos turns out looking weird, and videos won't play, etc. i don't think this version of IE would bug me if i could convince the stupid thing to remove the anti-aliasing gooblargh. it makes the fonts much harder to read, which is the opposite of what it should do, if i understand people correctly.

You should be able to turn off ClearType by following these instructions:

1.) Click Tools > Options

2.) Click on the Advanced tab in the Internet Options window that pops up.

3.) In the Advanced Settings, scroll down to the Multimedia section and find the box labeled "Use ClearType" and uncheck it. It's the last box in the Multimedia section.

5.) Click OK.

now a moot point: my husband decided to reformat my computer, and now everything is SCREWED. i'll save the instructions for future reference, though, in case i ever get a chance to try them out...
