Thoughts on the latest LJ wank:

So there is wank! Apparently LJ is listed on Spamhaus as they are having too much in the way of trouble with spammers recently, and this has potentially been impacting people's ability to receive notifications based on which email service they use. People are upset because they aren't getting their notifications, and because there's spam popping up ( Read more... )

You know, I never understood this.

Why is even GETTING e-mail notifications such a big fucking deal? Livejournal has its own on-site inbox for its notifications, meaning that if you really must DESPERATELY see if someone tagged you on your newest RP, you can JUST FUCKING CHECK THAT.

The same thing happened when I RP'd with friends on InsaneJournal -- as IJ's servers are much newer and buggier, there were times that notifications would glitch out and not send and I HEARD NO END OF BITCHING ABOUT IT. Is it really, TRULY that hard just to keep track of the conversations you have, RP-based or otherwise?!

I truly feel the problem here is people that demand to get emailed notifications, not Livejournal.

To be fair - it is one of those services you pretty much expect any system to provide. Having to go on-site for your notifications is not good user design; LJ have dropped the ball in how they're dealing with this to a certain extent. I'm not trying to defend them outright - more I'm just trying to fill in some arguments that I rarely see people make.

Have we really become so lazy that people don't make this argument any more? Facebook is just the bastard child of Myspace and Twitter, Livejournal has gotten to the point where it's really more like a glorified net forum. Hell, I keep catching myself trying to put in BBCode for the HTML.

Birthday notifications are one thing. "hey someone replied to you" as a 'default' notification is both obnoxious and strikes me as particularly attention-whoring. When I check my mail, I don't want to be told that people like me, I want to check my mail. Which usually involves tossing anything from Livejournal, Facebook, etc etc in the trash anyway.

I've had a grand total of 3 spam comments on my lj ever. Which were screened (because I set it up that way) and deleted. If it reached epidemic proportions I probably wouldn't bother deleting them ( ... )

I've got my own opinion on most of the anti-spam blacklists but leaving that aside ( ... )
