OOC: I join the bandwagon of JOY!

I totally haven't had this ready to go since my app was accepted. Really.

So, who is Morrigan of the Wilds?

That's the Cliff Notes version, anyway.

THE CANON

Dragon Age: Origins is a single-player RPG developed by BioWare's Edmonton studio and published by Electronic Arts. It is the first game in the Dragon Age franchise and was released in 2009. Set in the fictional kingdom of Ferelden during a period of civil strife, the player assumes the role of a warrior, mage or rogue who must unite the kingdom to fight an impending invasion by demonic forces.

Also, it is as addictive as FUCK ALL. If you haven't played it yet, go. I'll sit here and wait.

No. Really. You can get the Ultimate Edition on eBay or Amazon for PC, XBox 360, or PS3. There is no excuse not to play this game.

You begin the game by completing one of the six origin stories corresponding to the race and background of the character you created upon choosing a new game. Things happen, depending on what you picked for your character, and in every origin story, the player is introduced to Duncan, a Grey Warden who is trying to find recruits to fight the Blight. The Blight? = BADNESS. Demon-y-creatures (known as darkspawn) overrunning the surface and killing everything in their path is generally a bad thing, and it is the sworn duty of the Grey Wardens to stop it. By the end of your origin story, the player's character (PC, from here on out) is drafted/recruited/selected as a potential Grey Warden, and leaves with Duncan.

The PC and Duncan journey to Ostagar in southern Ferelden, to join Cailan (king of Ferelden) and Loghain (a legendary general & Cailan's father-in-law), where the three leaders plan to make a stand against the encroaching darkspawn before the Blight can overwhelm Ferelden.

Things do Not Go As Planned.

Your PC has some basic leveling-up/advance the story missions in the Wilds, where you encounter Morrigan, a rogue mage - or apostate - with an attitude who scares the bejeeus out of your companions (because they are smarter than you), and her mother. You retrieve the documents you were sent for, and return to camp for the Big Battle.

The PC and another new-er Warden, Alistair, are assigned to light a signal flame, but find their location overrun with Darkspawn. Once they DO get it lit, the PC Warden and Alistair both get shot, and all the forces on the field at that time are slaughtered. Cheerful, innit?

Things quickly progress from there. Your PC and Alistair get rescued by Flemeth, who nurses you back to health, and then you, Alistair, and Morrigan are Off to Save the World from the Blight by mobilizing armies and finding a way to kick ass. They'll eventually meet the sexily-fantastic duelist pirate-queen Isabela (rivaini_pirate), too, but that's a tale for another day.

Morrigan couldn't care less about your Ferelden politics. She's just there because her mother told her to keep the Warden alive, and stopping the Blight would be nice.

THE WITCH OF THE WILDS

Morrigan is a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch. Sarcastic, blunt, fearsomely intelligent, and unwilling to bow before the law of the Chantry outlawing her kind. Take all Emma Frost's worst qualities and strip away even the vaguest pretenses of trying to be nice, and you have Morrigan. She does have a softer, squishy side, as Kate Mulgrew, who voices Flemeth said, "Morrigan is innocent. She is beautiful. She is vulnerable." According to Mary Kirby, "[Morrigan] best symbolizes the world and the conflicts within it," and when asked to compare a list of NPC companions to food, BioWare employee Cori May described Morrigan as "the darkest of dark chocolates; bitter but rich."

Morrigan is supposedly the daughter of Flemeth -- a legendary and fearsome personage who has walked the Korcari Wilds for centuries. However, Morrigan consistently dismisses these tales and is reluctant (or unable) to confirm Flemeth's actual background.

Morrigan was raised by Flemeth, and so kept separate from the nearby villagers. Villagers tell their children that the Witches eat children, so you can see where they don't usually get along well. Because of this, Morrigan has had limited interaction with other humans, though her ability to shapeshift meant that she has often found solace in the company of animals. Morrigan generally dislikes the race of man, yet finds herself strangely intrigued by them. She finds it vexing, and Morrigan expresses little sympathy for the plight of others and disapproves of helping people without gain.

Her appearance is, well, Claudia Black. In Bioware's character file for her, her appearance is described as: "A svelte, exotic-looking young woman with long black hair and large (yellow) eyes. Her body is relatively thin and not strong," and Black is Morrigan's voice actress.

Flemeth is sending Morrigan to teach at Fandom PRE-CANON, with the excuse of saving magic users from the Chantry, to prepare her for interacting with the Warden. Morrigan just wants to observe humanity, with the hope that being immersed in a village will cure her of her fascination with the grubby little creatures.

ANOTHER WITCH AT FANDOM?

Indeed.

Rumors speak of barbarians that hold secrets of transforming the body into the form of animals. The Circle of Magi and the Chantry deny such stories, but the ability persists in the Dalish elven clans, as well as in remote areas of Ferelden, passed down secretly in families. The mighty bear is popular as are wildcats, spiders, and even birds. Legend tells of mages who mastered even more fantastical and deadly forms. Morrigan and Flemeth have mastered all of these, and Flemeth herself may be more dragon than human. Morrigan tends to favor becoming a spider (a BIG spider) or a bear, although she often takes the form of a wolf or wildcat as well.

Morrigan has also mastered most basic-to-advanced mage skills. Summoning ice, fire, and lightning, she is a mistress of elemental magic, curses, and even basic healing. Shapeshifting, however, is her joy and greatest strength.
