This is really well done, although I think that your canon instances show more that Simon is a good chess player who can think a few moves ahead.

I wrote a couple of stories where River and Simon had a sex-linked genetic syndrome that included psi, so River expressed the syndrome fully but Simon was just a carrier.

Oh definitely. I wouldn't doubt he's amazing at chess and is a really amazing strategist (as evidenced in Ariel.) What interests me are the moments where you really can't explain how Simon got to that line of thinking

I'm very glad that I'm not the only one that glommed on to the fact that Simon and River are presented as complete opposites. That detail makes me wonder that if show had lived out its life span, if there was a plan to have them on the opposite sides of something major, facing each other. . . .serious drama potential, there.

I'm not quite sold on your theory, yet. We don't exactly know what River's "psychic-ness" actually entails, so my question would be is precognition actually the opposite of what River does? However, I do think you may be on to something, so I can't wait to read the next part.

I find this absolutely fascinating. In fact I was just doing a rewatch yesterday and while watching OiS I had a niggling thought in the back of my head when Mal suggested that River was a Reader. Simon hardly reacts to this piece of information. He might have known River was psychic from so long having to hear her non-sequitors and connecting the dots or if maybe he could 'see' things that were going to happen like she could sometimes. idk, and I didn't seriously think about it until stumbling across this post.
so i know its like years later, XD, but any chance of continuation?
